Default Is the Supergrafx worth owning?

Any owners out there want to give their opinion of the Supergrafx. I've wanted one since I saw some screenshots in EGM way back when. Has to be the ultimate eight bitter.

Here's the question and answers asked once before:
    http://www.digitpress.com/forum/view...ght=supergrafx

Opinions may have changed since then so I won't lock this, but I still feel the same way. It's great if you're just going to do HuCards, otherwise you might as well go for the Duo.

It's not worth it. Also a PC Engine/Core Grafx and CD add isn't a bad idea either.

Agreed...not really worth it unless you're an obsessive PCE freak

The few games for it can be pretty expensive. I would pass.

Do any of these naysayers have one?

I have one, and it's got a very high 'cool factor'. VERY high. It isn't practical though. If you want to play the most games, your better off with a Duo.

BUT only the SuperGrafX can play the few SuperGrafX games. there is no mod or tweak that will allow you access to the tiny SuperGrafX library, other than an actual SuperGrafX (or emulation of course).

That's why it's so cool. Usually cool and practical are mutually exclusive, and this is no exception.

Not worth it. Very few games....I`d pick a different system.

    Ha! It's 24-bit! 8+8+8= 24......

The points about it being limited are obviously true.

But, Ghouls&Ghosts is fantastic and worth the price of admission alone. Also, Granzort is actually pretty good too. And if you're into shooters and have coin to blow, get 1941 as well.

It has been commented by several others that the ultimate PCE setup is a SuperGrafx with SuperCDRom2 attachment. Or even better a region modded SGx. Or an S-Video and region modded SGx....

1941 would be the reaosn to get it as it's the only home system port of the game. As most of us have said it's not worth it.

I own one, and I will trade it to you at any given time for some cool Turbo/PCE stuff that I don't have.

I kind of speed read the other posts, but my point of view is this:

If you really like the 5 games for it; then get one. If you don't have a PCE system, or Turbo system with some sort of import support yet; then get one. If you really like NEC, TurboGrafx, and or PC-Engine; then get one.

    Otherwise, save your money.

Come to think of it, I have the exact same point of view towards the Arcade Card.

Yes but the arcade card doesn't cost as much as a Super Grafx. Plus if you have the CD addon getting an Arcade Card Pro doesnt' cost that much more than 3.0 card most of the time.

Yeah, no shit. Don't take that the wrong way, though... just a for lack of better terms. Previously I was implying that unless you have to have those games, save your money for something besides an Arcade Card. MAME is free, Neo Geo is better, Strider and Wrestling aren't that good, any opinion on Mad Stalker?

I had one. Decided to sell it rather than keep it. And I had Ghouls N Ghosts for it as well as Granzort. Just wasn't enough to warrant me keeping it at the time. Now that I have a line on 1941...I may have to get another one tho....

Mad Stalker is alright but nothing special. You can get it on the PSX, X68000, FM Town and probably a few other system that I'm forgetting.

1941 is a great shooter...enjoyed it very much...Ghouls 'n Ghosts is great on the system too...better than the Genesis version graphically and animation-wise(there are little animations such as the trees blowing in the first level that were left out of the Genesis version) but I think the Genesis' version has better music/sound. That being said, it's more of a neat thing to have/novelty than to get for the games. It can play all of the PC Engine games, though if that's what you want there are obviously cheaper alternatives.

If only they had released the version of Strider they were working on! I understand that the remnants of it were ported over for the Arcade Card (don't know if that's true), but that version sucks compared to the Genesis version. The screenshots on EGM looked awesome back in the day. Apparently the guy working on it killed himself. BTW, it's worth getting Strider 2 for the PSX just to play the arcade perfect port of Strider that comes with it.

I kind of liked some of the things they added to the ACD Strider version like the voices, extra levels. Too bad no one made a better port out of that one. I know there was an X68000 version but I haven't tried it out.

I don't believe I have the Mad Stalker FM Town version but I would have to check. I know I have a few titles sitting around that people asked me if I could figure out how to get work on UNZ but haven't gotten around to it yet.

If you simply must play the whole library, It's best to have a Turbo Duo and a SuperGrafx, granted there's only 5 (or seven , depending on how you look at it) extra games the SuperGrafx wil play. Plus, you may need an Arcade Card and a Kisado adapter (or a Japanese Turbo Duo), for imports to really play them ALL.

Nope. Best way is to have a modded SuperGrafx with a Super CD Rom2 add-on. The ultimate.

I just got my SuperGrafx a couple of weeks ago, and today Ghould N' Ghosts arrived in the mail. Let me tell you, I've been waiting a full 15 YEARS for this day! Great game, I can't put it down.

The SG has also has a rediculosly high "cool" level, and I honestly don't know why. Perhaps it's the awesome name (best system name ever IMO). Perhaps it's the sexy looks. I don't know. Whatever, I remember being almost in tears when reading it wasn't coming to the US, and that it was cancled after a little more thana year in Japan. Along with Dreamcast, this is the greatest system ever that failed. Very sad indeed.
