Default Interview with Howard Scott Warshaw (Yar's/E.T./Indy Jones)

From our archives: Scott Stilphen interviews Howard Scott Warshaw, whose initials are indelibly etched into any Atari 2600 gamer worth his or her salt - the designer of Yar's Revenge, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. speaks to us about his life with and without Atari.

HSW had a whole lotta hair, didn't he.

Thanks for the link -- it seems this interview is a few yrs old but I don't think I ever read it. Personally, I was unaware of the three ET easter eggs. Back in those crazy Atari early 80's, I always wondered who did the games, how they did them, why they seemed so different from arcade to 2600. It's been a real kick to read the answers and stories as they slowly unfold over time.

"DP: It’s cool in that there’s no one way to solve it. Atari must have been jammed with calls and letters for information."

How many different ways can Raiders be solved?

    "Easter egg punk"

Did you find the easter egg in Old Guru's Castle Blast?

    .... I did.

Somebody once told me to get a life.

I told them I sold it for money to buy video games.

What is it? You want me to blab a secret? No way! Playing Castle Blast is the way to get ze answer!

(and as a personal plug) ... there's a easter egg in Koffi, and don't go be looking in disassembled code looking for my initials either (I'm talking to you Debro, if you are ever here that is!) TOP SECRET MAY NEVER BE FOUND but easy to do when you know how.

DP: The Neutral Zone was a neat effect too.

HSW: Do you know what that is? Here’s a great piece of trivia! It’s the actual program code, laid out vertically, and counter-scrolling over each other. I almost had a problem with Atari over it, because they felt it was a copyright violation to show the code on the screen. But I explained to them that first, besides the scrolling, there was some X-Y and random color processing being done to it, and second, if somebody could get the code from that, then they deserved it!
    WOW, that's very cool!!
