If you like the original TMNT on the NES, give this game a shot. It uses the same engine.

It's usually spelled "Getsufuu Maden" or something similar. Helps in finding information and stuff.

One of the coolest box designs around, too.

Actually it's Getsu Fuu Ma Den which means "Moon Wind Devil Story". I've got a review of it here. Excellent game - I owned it for a while, but if you don't know Japanese it'll be a bit on the tough side.

Oddly, the link given by THX is from the site run by the guy that sent me my copy of the game, Hotaka Sato. Ain't that weird...

Hey, the ability to jump once at *any* time (i.e. after falling off a ledge) isn't mentioned! You gotta mention that! That and all the other touches make it unique. No matter which of the viewpoints you're playing in, there's something to make the current task a lot of fun.

One thing about this game - it's HARD. Very hard. The platforming sections kick my arse.

Second - the Alien - like creature seen in some 2D dungeons features prominently in a prerelease movie of Super Castlevania 4, as a burrowing creature. It's one and the same.

Thanks for the review - I'll be spelling the title differently now (my original use was what somebody told me, and that's what GameFAQs uses, in my defense, heh!)

I didn't write the review, but I may go back and add that at some point.

Perhaps I can relate to that and came out a champion. I beat Getsufuu before. Just if you attempt to beat it, try to do as much as you can. cause the Japanese password can be a bitch sometimes. I once got real far on it and got the password, just so happens when I put the password in, I come across a certain character that I relook at the chart many many times and I don't see it so that forced me to start over. So I had to find a time I didn't have nothing to do and just beat the game in one sitting next to my computer with the walkthru on my monitor. it was easy, but also exhausting as well cause of the 3-D dungeons.

...and if you have to download a ROM to play this, there is a translated ROM out there.

Now, he says that Getsu Fuu Ma Den is the first of the truly good Action RPGs. Beyond Wonderboy in Monster Land, I can't think of one with a 2D viewpoint and *leveling.* What's else out there is older?

I had no idea you could double jump off ledges like that. I was wondering how the hell you were supposed to get some of those items hovering over pits without losing lives.

Getsu Fuu Ma Den was one of the first Famicom games I played through emulation. I sought the rom out after seeing the character in Wai Wai World. It is a great game. Very hard, though a lot of the difficulty also seems to come from not knowing where the hell to go. I also had a lot of difficulty figuring out what some of the items do, and how to use them.

Regarding the comment of early action RPGs, there is Zelda II. That came out before Getsu Fuu.

Well, you can only jump once, but you can jump during a fall. I just tried doing it when I saw that first 1-up in a pit :)

Guess Zelda II came first...ah, this game kicks its ass o_O

Anything else? We've got thee games so far. Heh (plus, there's a Wonder Boy on the SG-1000, which I didn't know but I'm not very well educated about the SG-1000 yet).

One last note - what the hell's up with GameFAQs? I've noticed a few games listing North American versions incorrectly, and it's listing a release date for "Getsufuu Maden" a day before the Japanese release of 07/07/87. Heh!

    Japanese Fan Site.

    Thanks Google.

I always enjoy learning about NES/Famicom era Konami games, that company was on such a hot streak then. So many great or at least interesting games.

Found this one too, complete with sweet MIDI:

The SG 1000 Wonderboy is a port of the first game. Which was just a regular platformer. The SG 1000 is very similar to the MSX, and thus can't handle scrolling, so the game feels pretty jerky. Otherwise it isn't too bad a port considering the hardware its on.

No leveling in Wonderboy? There's money and shops, though...

Not in the first Wonderboy. In 2 and 3 there are money and shops.. not sure about the leveling, though.
