Default Contra - the original NES version

Having seen a lot of talk recently about the new Contra game for GC, I must shyly admit that until tonight, I had never played the original.

Well, tonight I pulled out the original and found it HARD. the 2D side scrolling section wasn't that bad, but once I got into the first base, I was blown away.

Anyone have any suggestions or strategies to help me out? Thanks.

The Original Contra is one of those Games that will for-ever be remembered for it's Difficulty. I have gotten so good at it that I can best it in one 3 life game. The 30 Man code I think is the most remembered code of any game ever.

    Thanks

My roomate in college last year was a jock, and he swore up and down that video games were too nerdy, and wouldn't play gamecube with us. One day, he saw I had contra emulated on my PC and promptly exclaimed "Holy shit, Contra!". He then sat down and began to play. I then watched him beat it without taking a hit. Three times in a row. Then, he asked if I had the original SMB. I said, of course, that I did. He sat down and played that, and also beat that game on one life. Apparently, he played a whole hell of a lot of Nintendo as a kid. Not a gamer my ass!

Contra is pretty easy. Just learn the patterns / stages and you'll start getting through with a minimum of lives lost.

Spread is by far the best weapon in the game. Hoard it whenever possible, and hit that fire button like a madman.

In the 3D stages, bullets will fly over you if you hold down to duck. Don't try to jump them -- that's much more dangerous. Just duck. Remember to shoot the red fellows for power-ups. And you only need to destroy the round sensors to proceed to the next room.

Quick Side note:Lightining on Super C sucks. I like Spread and Fire.

Don't forget If you're going to play NES Contra via an emu, make sure you play the jap version (Gryznor(?)) as it has a lot of cool extras that didn't make it into the U.S. version

Ah, Contra, now there's a masterpiece. It's also one of the easiest NES games ever made. Just learn the patterns and make sure to have some good power-ups and you'll be fine. Of course, the real fun is with two players; maybe you should grab some friends if you want to master the game.

And am I the only one who felt the original Contra was always the best one? (That is, not counting Gunstar Heroes)

I don't know if you're trying to be funny But the fact is, even if you find it's pretty easy, Contra is FAR from the "easiest NES game ever". There are lots of other titles that can take that title. :P

    Thanks everyone.

anotherfluke - I'll give that code a try.

BenT - I kind of noticed that when I was playing, but I would just panic and try to jump out of the way anyway.

Daniel Thomas - I think I will try and rope someone into playing with me... er, playing Contra with me Though I doubt the wife would go for it, she's not much into shooters at all.

Again, thanks everyone. Oddly enough, after I posed this msg I took out the trusty ol' game genie and loaded up the unlimited lives cheat. Maybe it's the fact that I knew I couldn't really die, but I sucked way worse with the cheat on. I must have died 10 times before reaching the first base with the game genie.

Comparing that with 1 death on my first run through... huh.

Dude, this is my favorite NES game of all time!!!!!

    <---- Can you tell?

This is THE game that got me into NES collecting! Multiplayer is freakin awesome, and I have soooo many memories of playing it, I get all nostalgic just by looking at it!

Just memorize where the enemies are, and while your learning, use the cheat code. Oh yeah, definitely play with a friend!
