    Default XBOX Wireless Adapter Question

I just spent 2 hours on the phone with Microsoft and Linksys setting up my Wireless Router for my XBOX Live and my Laptop. WOOHOO

My question is the Microsoft Wireless Adapter is plugged in and on. Should I just leave it on out unplug it when not in use?

I am kinda new to this and I want to do what is right

    Hope someone knows

No offense but, shouldn't you have asked them while you were on the phone? I personally would leave it on.

I had no problems setting wireless stuff up.

Make sure you use a WEP security key.

sorry to dig up an old thread but which adapter did you guys use for a wi-fi xbox, the official one or some random access point from the usual networking companies (linksys, dpoint, netgear). and how do you guys feel about the performance of the thing?

    thanks

    sure beats authoring another thread

I was debating on asking for the Official Xbox one for Xmas.

    How is the wireless?
I won't be able to connect to Live from my room unless i get wireless or run my 50 foot cat5 cable into the living room where the modem is.

I kind of find the Microsoft official Xbox wireless adapter to be a bit overkill. I imagine that most people here use either DSL or cable internet connections. The official Microsoft adapter (link HERE) uses 802.11g wireless when 802.11b adapters can be had for about half the price. 802.11g might have better range, but the bandwidth doesn't have any benefit for online gaming.

If your Xbox is modded and tied to your local LAN, then the 802.11g might be a better choice if you're regularly streaming movie files with high bit rates or doing large file transfers regularly.

Actually, G has a shorter range than B. Technically it's the same, but after XX feet, G drops down to the B standard, so the ONLY advantage is the additional bandwidth, and for LIVE you won't need it, as B is already faster than and DSl or cable modems speeds you'll see. So as stated above, the only need for G is if you do a lot of stuff locally with a modded machine. I use a Linksys wireless bridge myself and it works great.

To answer dsullo's original question, I would only unplug it if you're trying to save on electricity.

Actually, wireless is a tad bit slower than a wired connection, not enough to matter though. It's easy to tell the difference on both xbox's and computers that are wired vs wireless. Xbox Live is lag free for me, though, unless it's caused by somethign else (i.e. someone uploading on the network). Also, leave your reciever on, as well as the router. If the reciever is turned on before the router then it can cause connection issues, and you'll have to reset it. So, to save the time of resetting it, just leave them both on.

Of course wireless is slower than wired, but it's still faster than your connection to the outside world, unless you have one hell of a connection anyway.
