Related topic -- did anyone else here lose their game progress because of the 'Sword Bug' that plagued early copies of the game?
I was SO PISSED when I called Capcom and was told about it. Stupid save bug......

I think you have to go to the "records hall" or whatever it's called. It's a big room with a blue floor, and the guy you have to speak with is more on the left side of the screen rather than in the center.

I was trying to find some info about the bug online. My memory is pretty hazy about the exact item but the problem is clear enough. Maybe someone else will jump in here and be able to help.
There's a item midway through the game -- I think it's a key -- that is inside a chest at the bottom of one of the caves. I can recall playing the game as soon as it came out, and finding the chest, and it was empty. Confused, I called the Nintendo Game Conselors -- who were just a normal long distance call in those days -- and they advised me that Capcom had alerted them to a bug in the game, that sometimes if you saved the game in the FIRST save slot that the key item would'nt apear. Since my saves were all linked to that game, I had to start over again.
The solution? DON'T USE THE FIRST SAVE SLOT. Ignore it all together and save in the other two.
I don't know if they fixed this bug in later copies. I've also heard reports that it's not just this item, just the most commong one -- there are VERY RARE reports that sometimes key people and/or key items are missing from the game now and then and require a restart. I can't confirm that, though.
All in all, it's a great game, just wanted to ask if anyone else remembered having that problem in 1988.

Now here's a question, how would one know if they had an early copy with the bug, compared to one without the bug without playing through to find the Key, if that's possible?

I don't think there is a way, at least I don't recall hearing about any in the late 80's when I was a kid. Like I said, I don't know if this was ever fixed.
