Default FFXI NIB: to collect, or not to collect

I am a sucker for games with proprietary hardware. No chance I'll be throwing down a monthly fee to play this, but that big box and that hard disk seem like something I'll have trouble finding some day down the line- especially with the PSTwo's out there. I'd be paying $99 to have a copy complete in box, never to be played by me. Hmmm.

How many of these do we think are out there, and will value rise or stabilize, even when the MMORPG service goes down?

On the same level, I can't resist music games with proprietary hardware- worse yet, I feel like I should buy a pair for parties. (ex. DK Bongos, Taiko.) For fear that I'll have another Samba De Amigo on my hands.

Honestly I suspect the value will plumet when the service goes down. I mean yes people do collect unplayable sealed games, but they're generally only valuable if there's a demand for them in the first place. So while yes a sealed ff3 is worth it's weight in gold, a loose ff3 is just as easy to sell. So when the market's over flooded with unplayble ffXI disks I really can't imagine there being a market for collectors.

I guess I was thinking about the hard disk and packaging. For example, I think about the 2600 Gameline or Samba De Amigo Maracas (out of date hardware, but Maracas are a bad comparison.)

I'd think those old beta kits would remain the really valuable item.

id say that a complete set up in the box will be harder to find later on, but for the most part, it is a very hardcore game, and i cant see too many ppl that bought it not keeping the box and everything with it complete....

so, id say later on it will increase in value, but not so much so that you cant get it for maybe $120 as opposed to $100 now

I'd say the Dreamcast Broadband adapter is a better comparison:

Atleast a few years later, it's still holding it's value. Not sure how many games/servers are still usable with it though.

You can still connect to fan run servers, I've seen pages for dreamcast free internet ISPs and another site that told you where to connect for PSO.

Now if FFXI had player run servers I'd play it.

I look at the HDD FFXI combo every day and dream of having it only to put on a shelf. I would never play it. My brother would BEG to play it. I sure ain't gonna pay a fee.

So far none have sold. We've had them forever. I wonder if the Holiday season will help, if not, I wait for the day they get clearanced or drop to $50. I'll spend $50 on the thing. No more. Less would be preferred. granted I don't even have a PS2 capable of using it even for a HD Loader. But still, the box would look kick-ass on my shelf and since I've satisfied my box-opening gene by taking an already opened one and feeling up all the internal parts, I can keep mine sealed. Yippie! But of course, I have a feeling Kmart or Sony will wait until the PS3 comes out before they drop its price.

Since when is the FFXI HDD pack worth $99? It's more like $60-$80 brand new in stores. Like Jasoco said, $50 is coming soon enough.

I'm glad I got FFXI for the PC when it first came out.

But yeah, if any of the BETA FFXI test kits show up on EBay, GRAB IT! THOSE are the ones that will be worth the big bucks.

From what I've seen, it's always been $100 at my store sadly. $50 for the game. $50 for the HD. I suppose.
