Default Game Saves - How often is right?

I've been curious to ask this for a while along with the Xbox question that I asked earlier today.

Do you like to play games that allow you to save anywhere, that have save points or do not allow you to save progress. For games that don't allow you to save progress, do you like it if they save your high scores or not.

Please answer with the answer that you think is the most. Obviously, depending on the game your opinion can change -- but in general, what is right for you?

Personally, I've really taken to games that I can save where ever. I usually don't have enough time most of the time to sit down and play a game until I get to another checkpoint or something like that anymore. I would follow that closely by games that do not allow you to save your progress -- there is something great about having to start over in SMB when you die.

    What about you?

As often as possible. I hate re-tracing my steps.

I picked the first option, mainly because I play a lot of RPG's and I like the freedom to save whenever I want. For platformers I like saving after every level/checkpoint.

First time through, saving is good. If the game's got replay value, I'll try playing without save points. A good game (Resident Evil 2, Mischief Makers) will give you good reasons NOT to save (with RE2, you get bonus stuff, with Mischief Makers, if you take advantage of respawning/continues, you don't get to start the clock over).

I can feel bad when I save too often because it can eliminate challenge, but sometimes you have to

Well, I like for games to at least be challenging, so it's good when the saves are at end of levels. Although when I'm playing RPGs and there hasn't been a save around for like 2 hours I get really scared. If I die and I haven't saved for a few hours it's unlikely that I will do all of the same mess all over again.

Line taken from Gateway II for the PC by Legend:

Jesus saves. And so would he, if he was playing a game as hard as this one! Save early, save often.

I've lived by those lines for the last 20 years of game playing.

    whenever i want

i hate doing the same thing over and over again...if i do it once...that should be enough.....its fine to have to redo it until you do it right, but once you have gotten past a certain point, you shouldnt have to go back there again
