    Default PLAYSTATION 2 HELP

My PS2 keeps displaying a disc read error. I have yet to clean the lens. If I do I will have to buy a lens cleaning kit. Should I save my money and just buy a new PS2 or is it worth it to clean the lens once. I guess I could always use the lens cleaning kit again if i needed to. Also- are there modchips for the new PS2 model? Thanks to all!

I see. Have you tried calling sony at all? I don't know if it will work or not for you, though they (sony) fixed my PS2 for free after my DRE problem.

See my post in this thread:

You should be able to get it fixed for free (not including shipping). But if your PS2 is modded, you should probably forget about it and save up for a new one or try to repair it yourself (if you are so inclined). I don't know if a lens cleaning kit would help. Most people seem to be fixing their DREs by adjusting a control on the drive and cleaning the lens and some other parts of the drive. Check the PlayStation 2 Hardware FAQs at GameFAQs for detailed instructions.

I think I am going to try contacting Sony first. I bought my PS2 right after Sega announced that VF4 was coming. I think I got it at the end of Feb. 2001. If they offer to fix it for free and shipping isnt too much I think it's worth it for sure. It must be a big problem for Sony if they are fixing PS2's long after the warranty. Thanks to everyone for the advice!

yes, it was/is a big problem, they had a class action lawsuit against them i do believe, as it was proven they knew of the common dre's and still sold ps2's despite.

I find if you put the sony up and down instead of laying flat it will get rid of the DRE. Worked for mine and my friends ps2.

Shipping(depending how heavy your packing material is) should be about 10-12 dollars. Do not send the console inthe original PS2 box, you probably will not get it back.

I recommend you fix it yourself. As long as you don't rush it and take it easy, re-adjusting the laser is pretty easy. Its a learning experience, plus you'll get to save some cash and buy yourself a Christmas present instead.

I had a similar problem myself: my brother sent me over his PS2 from Greece, and although it was working when it left, it couldn't read any sort of disc when it arrived... I looked on the net and found a few guides, and after a few hours of careful adjustment my PS2 was working just like new!

I was about to pop my PS2 open and adjust the lens. I originally thought about putting my PS2 upright but quicky wrote the idea off. I said "fuck it" and turned it upright. It worked! Thanks! I hope it continues to work.

try puttin in a disc and turning your ps2 upside down if it work then its due to worn mechanical parts made of plastic.
    Broken? fix it.
