    Default Genesis Box Question

So what's the deal with the games that were released with plain old cardboard boxes rather than the hard plastic ones? Were these later releases or what. Some of the games that I have with these poxes include Ms Pacman, Pacman 2: New Adventures, Ahhhh Real Monsters, Light Crusaders and a bunch more.

Yeah I'd like to know which ones were released in cardboard boxes vs hard plastic. Anyone got a list?

Later releases generally were the cardboard boxes...they are cheaper to produce than using the plastic boxes. Also, when some games were re-released, they got the paper box treatment.

All the boxes on my site were scanned and pieced as though they were the plastic box inserts.

I'd like to see a list of every game that came in cardboard. I'm weird I guess, but I'm interested in different box variations. It could be that some games were released very little in cardboard, and that version of the box may be pretty hard to find. If somebody starts a new thread for this, I'll go pull out all my boxes.

There are even more variations than just these though. EA released those "first run" sports games I think they were called. I've got a few of em. They're all serial numbered on the front. I'd be interested to know what games have these, and what the serial number goes up too. I've heard very little talk about those, I'm surprised.

EA released some of their older games in cardboard too. The first John Madden was in cardboard if I remember right, and I've got Battle Squadron in cardbord too. Did these come out in plastic as well, or just cardboard?

To go even further than this, some manuals were printed in color, and in black and white for the same game. That probably goes along with the seperate cardboard box print run. I've got 3 or 4 games where I have both manuals.

Anybody else as weird as me here? lol

This looks like a job for hinklesnort.

But I guess the categories for Genesis cardboard are late Genesis releases (PS4, Mega Bomberman, Comix Zone, etc), early EA releases (Bulls vs Lakers vs Celtics (one of the two), Budokoan, Populous, Zany Golf, etc), and Majesco releases (TT Adventures to name one).

Here;s something else, I found a Sonic cart, labeled as Genesis, that had blue text top label, and a front background with child drawn - esque cartoons in the back (like eggman and a freed animal). I'll hopefully scan it tomorrow if no one has any idea what I'm talking about It looks COMPLETELY different from the common one you see everywhere.

Comix Zone & Sonic 3 were also released as plastic boxes.

Beyond Oasis, Risk, & Gauntlet 4 were also Paper Box releases.

Hmmmm...ok..looking at my games and the games I've seen:

Gauntlet 4 was released in a clamshell plastic case...I have it. Risk was also released in a clamshell.

The Sonic cart that portnoyd is talking about is the Mega drive artwork for the first game, and was also released with that artwork for the Genesis in Canada. Still dirt common...you just don't see it in the US a lot.

Hitman...Battle Squadron, as well as other EA releases like Star Control only came out in cardboard. I think they were the only company that did that back then, and Sega did it towards the end of the Genesis' life. The manuals..they got cheap I guess...cutting corners cause carts cost more to make than CDs?

Finally...other cardboard only releases that I know: Shining Force 2, Phantasy Star IV, Star Control, Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition

To add to this mix, EA also re-released a few of their games in different cart format - instead of those big honkin' carts with the yellow tab, they are regular size and shape. The game inside is the same little circuit board with one ROM. I know that at least Desert Strike was re-released this way.

I'm assuming the later titles were released by Sega and not Majesco, but I'm wondering about the re-releases in the paper boxes. Are all the paper box re-releases Majesco re-releases? It seems like all the ones I have, most of which were purchased at KB or TRU within the last 2 years, say distributed by Majesco Sales somewhere on the box and seem to be Genesis 3 era releases.

Good list Griking. However, I think we should note if each cardboard boxed game is an early EA release, late Genesis game, or cheap-o Majesco re-release.

It could get a bit messy because in some cases a game will fall into more than one category. For example, a late release Genesis game that came in cardboard could have been re-released by Majesco in slightly different packaging (it might just add Majesco's company info to the back, but it is different).

Edit: It would also be good to know which game had hardcase releases. Sonic 3, for example, also had a hardcase release (I think).

I think that the initial 1994 production run of Castlevania Bloodlines came in a hardcase. Majesco later rereleased it with cardboard packaging.
