It is a feature on some of the newer tvs. It makes the image look more crisp.

Don't you need Component cables to use it though? My TV is MORE than capable of it, but:
    A. I didn't think the Gamecube COULD.
    B. I thought you needed comp. cables.

You do need the component cables. You need to have an HDTV (naturally), the component cables (http://store.nintendo.com for 29.95 plus 5.00 shipping in US), AND the HDTV has to support 480p progressive scan mode. If your TV has a feature called Line Doubling, then it is extremely likely that it supports progressive scan and will work with the cable. Even if you don't have progressive scan, but you do have component inputs, you can still benefit from using the component cables. Two things to keep in mind:

    1. You still need the original AV cable since the component cable doesn't have any audio out. You'd be amazed how many people call in because they threw away their old cable and need a new one. x_x

    2. Some people actually prefer the Component standard output over the Progressive scan output, so even if you don't have progressive scan, you might want to consider picking this cable up. It does wonders for the color red.

It was pretty stupid of Nintendo to not include a digital audio out on the Gamecube..

IT's also pretty stupid to have to pay $35.00 for a set of cables, expecially one without audio outs. I got MONSTER PS2 Optical audio and S video cables for less than that.
