    Default Controller signal encoding?

I am about to start work on a supergun for a guy here on the boards. When I looked at the 3 controllers I'm going to need to build I thought it would be nice to run 3 wires from the controller to the board instead of about 12 or so. To do this I'll need chips that encode and decode those multiple signals and send it down one line to the decoder I put on the Jamma+ board.

Now the question, what the hell am I talking about and how would I ever find this kinda product for sale. I know todays console controllers use them (hense the GCN's 3 wire controller ports).

Its nothing urgent, if these chips are cheap then why not run 3 lines instead of over a dozen. Boy I'm a geek.

Ok, maybe I'm smoking crack about GCN only needing 3 wires, but mine will only need 3. Anyhow, the part about the condensed signal is what I'm refering too.
