Default Which is the better system for online gaming, X-Box or PS2 ?

My buddy, who lives a couple hours away, asked me if I wanted to both get our systems online so we can play against each other like we used to do back when we were kids. We both have the 3 main systems and I know GC is not an option, so what is the preferred system for online play and why?

Thanks in advance for any info!!

Surely your question is rhetorical.... Or is it?

If you're willing to pay the 50 bucks per year.. Xbox Live murders the PS2 online capabilities. Mainly because online games for the PS2 are governed by the game designers where Xbox Live is a centralized server system maintained by Microsoft's megabucks.

Holy crap. It's been a while.

Yes, and you get what you pay for (nevermind the fact that very, very few PS2 games include online features in the first place).

If playing games over the internet for free is what you're after, get a used PC. As far as I'm concerned, the PS2 is a joke when it comes to online gaming (I am speaking from firsthand experience). Hell, even the Xband modem that came out for the SNES and Genesis way back in the day provided more fulfilling an online experience than does Sony's online network. The Dreamcast STILL offers a better online experience than does the PS2, and I say that taking into account the fact that many of the official servers for DC games have gone offline.

I second this motion. The choices are far more expansive and the price is far less expensive.

Well seeing how the only games I played online for on ps2 was sports games, it's well worth it. But paying money to play a game you alrdy own just doesnt do for me.

Several emulators offer online play for the PC, hook up with a buddy on speaker phone and play F-Zero, Super Mario Kart, etc. etc. Lots of fun to be had there.

well my buddy is somewhat anti PC, so that's not really an option. he is actually pushing hard for the PS2, but I had a feeling the Xbox was the way to go. Now I have to try and talk him into it.

Xbox is the better choice with the built in harddrive and you dont have to buy the broadband adapter and all that.

    But yeah nothing beats PC.

Maybe Sega X-Band would be kewl.

I wouldn't even bother with the ps2's online games. The only one that appeared even remotely appealing to me was Champions of Norrath, but that ain't worth the price of admission I'm afraid (I'd have to buy a ps2 ).

That said, rarely a week (or a few days) go by when I'm not playing on Xbox Live. It truly is awesome. More than 90% of those you play against will have headsets for team commmunication/shit talk, the friends list is super convenient and it's generally just very streamlined. It's like going drag racing...do you take the clunker or the Corvette? One gets the job done and makes sure you reach the finish line, but the other does it better, faster and with much more style and thrill. Xbox Live no doubt.

If you and your friend have doubts, use a 2 month free trial subscription. Most live enabled games these days have them packed in, so you can try it out before you commit to the $50 a year (which, I might add, is far less than the cost you would pay for a decent headset and the network adapter if you're still on the old-style ps2). The starter kits are only $70 and come with a year of service, Crimson Skies (the perfect starter game, $20 alone) and a headset (which alone cost $30!). It's not so bad at all when you break it down that way. Then throw in other features Live has, like stat tracking for certain games, content download (new maps, levels, characters, cars) and the ability to find your friend online without hassle and it's a no-brainer.

    xbox live....without a doubt

i have live and a bba for ps2 / gc

my gc bba is still sealed (im gonna try mkdd on warppipe one of these days) and the bba for ps2 was only bought because i wanted the hd loader advance 2 so i can load all my games to my 160 gb hdd to keep wear off the dvd drive

the one online ps2 game i have, auto modelista, well, i went online with it once to try it, and low and behold, i was the only person online with it.....1 person in the entire country on the game

xbox live you never have problems finding people

just go with the online setup that is proven the best, xbox live

$50 isnt that much, and if you can afford games, the system, video game collecting in general, and a cable / dsl connection, you should be able to afford $50 a year to play online
