Anyone own it? Played it? What is it like and why is it so hard to find?

Never owned it myself, but I remember readed an old artical in Gamefan about it and they wouldn't stop praising it, so it's atleast worth a look. As for the rarity of the game. I don't know, maybe because it was a game about a caveman finding numorus items and bones to build a tower to the sun and i'm guessing a low print run.Originally Posted by Rugal

i saw this game at a local videostore awhile ago for like $5. it looked dumb so i passed it up,later to find out it is R7 and no longer in the store
Wow....that's really weird. I used to see this game ALL the time at gamecrazy and eb. Never cared to check it out, just didn't look too interesting.
gave my copy away.
Weird and impossible to play.
Your caveman gets tired and falls asleep when he feels like it..
Fighting an enemy... falls asleep while they kill him..
Running full speed, falls asleep and skids on the ground..
My vote for most likely programmed by people on peyote game.
cant really win the game or lose cuz if you die you play the dead characters kid.

That game always seemed kinda interesting...If I ever see it again I'll be sure to pick it up. I remember some game mag bashing the hell out of it though..guess it's an acquired taste.

It's basically a game where you have to kill things to collect bones (femurs, it seems) to build a tower to get to the sun. And you have a huge, hilly, field to run around and kill things. I used to have it, and I see it often enough, and it's not really worth squat. I mean, there isn't very much demand.
I even thought it sounded really interesting, for whatever reason. Then again, I bought Aquanaut's Holiday thinking the same thing, and that game was objectively bad.

I've always wanted to try this out. I really hope it's not impossible to find and/or too expensive to acquire.

there is a pretty beat up looking copy at my local video store if anyone wants me to pick it up for them. you can always steal the missing inserts or whatever and polish the cd.
I remember when I went into my local indy shop one day that one of my friends who worked there tried to get me to buy weird PS games and demo'd this one. Neither of us could even figure out what the hell we we're suppose to do. It didnt matter all that much, I laughed WAY too much as he kept dying and falling asleep trying to maneuver thru the game.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

"Tail of the Sun" may not be for everybody, but I found it to be one of the most fun and purely enjoyable games I've ever played. Really! I've even beaten it multiple times just to see the "alternate endings".
It is essentialy a cave-man simulator. You have to keep your cave people fed to keep them healthy, and different foods (from over 50 types) have different effects on your tribe - they can make you stronger, smarter, better swimmers, etc.
You have to belance your diet, as well as hunt to stay alive.
Weak characters fall asleep more often, which may be what happened to some of the players here.
There are many secrets scattered around to discover - mysterious stone statues, a crashed UFO, even a cave-girl who will fall in love with you.
The overall goal of the game is to hunt mastodons - and kill enough of them to build a tower out of tusks to reach the "tail of the sun." (Gettit?)
This takes awhile, because mastodons are not easy to kill without getting killed yourself. You can throw rocks, or stumps, or even whole trees at them (depending on your strength), or try to fight them with your spear.
Your tribe honors your skills by making cave paintings of every animal you kill - you'll be surprised how fun it is to look back over your kills, every bat, lizard, monkey, hippo and bird lovingly rendered in cave art.
Your tribe will actually evolve, developing new weapons (like the spear) from the starting rock. They also will reproduce as long as you provide them with enough meat, and many of your tribe will have scarey animal faces, like spiders and fish. Very strange!
There are caves, secret underwater places, and numerous islands to explore. You don't get a map, but you will pretty quickly learn your way around the HUGE continent you are given to explore.
What more can I say? It's like no other game. You have to overlook the early PS programming and the limited field-of-view, (the camera always faces north, although you can look around using the shoulder buttons).
Underneath the primitive graphics is a truly original and very addictive game.
Trust me, the first time you track a caribou for days before finally bringing it down with a stick, you'll be elated.
It has great weird-o Japanese ambient music, too, with primal sounds and animal cries. The disc even includes a CD-worth of re-mixed tunes!
I usually ike oddball games, and I love Tail of the Sun". You might, as well.
It's only a game if you PLAY it!
