Does the screen turn on but display the color black, or not turn on at all? Mine turns on but is black, which is what the GG does if it can't read the cart, due to dirty contacts or bent pins. My GG doesnt work anymore because there is a bent pin in there or something. If I open up the case and apply some extra rearward pressure to the cart, then the game will load. You might try doing the same thing to see if that's a problem. AFAIK the game connector is soldered to the circuit board, making replacing it more of a hassle than it's worth.

I have one like yours. I've been too lazy to open it up but could be a bad solder contact somewhere on the board since twisting it a a couple of times will make it work.
But like said, clean the carts and the connector before you start twisting.
Um...How would I go about cleaning the Gamegear?

cleaning it is is a little tricky without a cleaning kit .
What I do it get a game and clean it with a q tip and alcohol and leave it a little wet and pull the game in and out of the unit and clean the game off each time.
If you can hear sound on the unit chances are you have a bad backlight on the system. If that is the case it would be cheaper to buy another unit rather than repair it. because of the cost.
