Default SNES 2 / SNES Jr. Question

I've been thinking about picking up the later released smaller model SNES (SNES2 / SNES Jr) but wanted to check if there is any significant difference between this and the older model.

I heard it was region free, which sounds to good to be true. Also, was it ever released as a PAL model?

    Grateful for any info!

It's nor region free, I know this for a fact. I couldn't play any of my Japanese Super Famicom games on it by itself. It is significantly smaller than the SNES model 1, maybe the size of a decent sized book. I don't think it was released as a PAL model because they had the PAL Super Famicom, which I only know as having that one model, but I may be entirely incorrect.

The SNES2's intestines got a PAL release ironically. They all were identical to the original SNES on the outside for some strange reason. The only real disadvantage of the SNES2 is that it can't be region modded.

If I remember correctly (I may be wrong), the redesigned SNES does not emit an S-Video signal. You're stuck using standard RCA cables, wich sucks because many SNES games look great in S-Video.

I will actually second the lack of s-vid....only rf or av output.

I like the look and design on the SNES2 better than the original, I'm not sure about any of the cables but standard AV cables are fine for me.

The SNES 2 plays Lufia 2 like an emulator. The graphics explode in one area, underwater temple I think... :/ There might be other minor compatibility issues with it, as well.

I clipped the tabs on mine, and it plays Japanese games just fine. As it should, of course.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and no power light. >_<

Game Genies have problems working on SNES2s. I know that the newer Game Genies sort of work, but only the first and last code lines (if the yellow dash in the code doesn't appear until the first 4 digits are entered, it's a newer version)

Pro Action Replays work fine, though.

Thanks a bunch, loads of info I did not know here. The design sure is sweet and I will probably pick up a japanese snes jr, since I mostly collect boxed SFC games.

Well, just get an American one and cut off the tabs, sorry I said it wasn't region free, I meant it wouldn't play PAL games. Properly, anyways. I personally use a Super 8, but this works as well.

I'll keep it in this thread. Was there any difference between controllers and the original model on this one?
Sasha Nein: Young man, I hope you've learned a lesson here today.
Raz: Yes, I have... that shooting things is fun and useful!

The way the plastic feels is different then the controller I got for my original SuperNes quite a few years before, that's the only difference I've noticed. The shape is the same, and it functions the same.

And the logo on the controller was changed.

I've never had an original larger SNES, I didn't know they did S-vid. I'll have to go pick one up.

It has the same hookup as the N64. That 'box' in the back. So you can use an RF switch in connection with it, so yes, RF is available.
