It's a front-light mod not a backlight.
And it was www.mashmods.com but I don't know if they're still doing it.
Seems to me it must be a custom application of the GBA Afterburner kit. Any thoughts?

It is just a GBA afterburner kit, you can note that the top and bottom of your NGPC screen will be 'cut' off due to the size difference of the 2 screens.
What I'm wondering about is if the Afterburner kit could be altered. I've never installed one.
