Default What's wrong with my Saturn?

My saturn recognises "ALL" CDs, including Games as Audio CDs, but will not play them for more than 20 seconds (for all of which is noise), real audio cds will play, but they sound like an old 45 record with thousands of bad scratches on it.

    What's wrong? Laser maybe?

That's an odd one. Check your cables. make sure your discs are US if your system is US, or japanese if the system is japanese.

Could be a failed modchip install, or a modchip that has come half uninstalled.

Are we getting the whole story? Is this an attempted mod? Formerly modded?

this is one i've had since i bought it brand new, never modded or did swap trick. It's been in attic for 2 years, now is like this, it did fall out of it's box when i took it out however (only about 2 feet).

I have unplugged all cables and put back in. Same results as before but it will play games, but only until it has to load something big (like a level)

Its possible that when it fell the laser eye was knocked out of alignment or something to that effect.

Possibility is infinity! You must be satisfied!

Well, i've tried my hardest fixing it, cleaning laser, cleaning contacts, adjusting pots etc.. and I think i'm just going to accept that it's dead.

If you look in the buying and selling forum, you'll see that I'm looking for a new one, so if anyone can help me out i'd much appreciate it.

that would be great, but unfortunately I live in England, the land of not many Sega Saturns. They didn't sell well at £399 (700dollars).

Perhaps the laser is stuck in a position, and it can't move. Try opening the saturn up and moving the laser by the gears.

It happened to my Sega CD. I tried moving the laser and it works like new.
