Default Tuesday Grudge Match: Metroid vs. Kid Icarus

Both debuted on the same day, both shared the brand-new password function, but only one went on to bigger and better things. But that doesn't matter, as this is a poll exclusively based on the 2 NES games.

I'm surprised Metroid only has one more vote than Kid Icarus so far. I myself voted for Icarus, great game, we need an update.

    Metroid.

Kid Icarus is alright, but no where near Metroid, in my opinion
I go online sometimes, but ... everyone's spelling is really bad, and it's ... depressing.

    Sheesh, that's a toughy.

To me Kid Icarus edges out the original Metroid but not by a lot. I loved the amount of difficulty this game had. Metroid was hard but not like Kid Icarus. The "fall of the screen and die" approach forced me to get better (even though there were fits of rage from time to time). Also, what other game tried to teach the responsibility of the credit card (for you youngins that never played the game: one of the treasures you can get is a credit card which allows you to purchase an item but any hearts you obtain afterward get put towards the card until it's paid off)? The graphics were fantastic for the time: cartoony looking characters, decent looking levels. The control was spot on and the power ups were decent, so much so that there were bad guys who would steal your stuff.

Out of all the games I have sold over the years, my copy of Kid Icarus is the original I received for Christmas the year it was released. My Dad read my Official Nintendo Guide and liked what he saw (and he didn't like games really except Golf) and practically snatched it from a lady at Kohls as it was the last copy. I never owned Metroid until years later.

I haven't voted yet, but I would probably say Metroid. But can Kid Icarus be labeled a "series" when there has only been one game made to date? I think Metroid will have the edge only because of the awesome games in its lineup.

I believe he is refering to the fact that the games were in the "adventure series" for Nintendo.

Was going to ask the same question.

My vote went to Kid Icarus if were talking about NES only. That game to me was so much better than Metroid. Call me a baby but the hardness of that awesome game takes the fun out of it for me.

I chose Metroid, but I gotta give an honorable mention to Kid Icarus for the intro music. When you first turn it on, it starts right in, and it was the best music I had heard in a video game at that point. Listen through it!

I confess, I never honestly got into Kid Icarus very much. Probably because I almost always get my ass kicked by the friggin' Reaper when he first appears, but I never got involved with KI. Can't explain it, really, but my vote goes to Metroid.

Kid Icarus in a walk. I liked that game enough back in the day to beat it. It was in fact the first game I ever beat, or "passed" as we used to say back then. Metroid is freakin awsome too, but I have to give the edge to the kid with the wings.

Kid Icarus sucked back in the day. Metroid was good back then, although it's aged terribly.

    Therefore, Metroid is better.

Kid Icarus - da kid wit da wings. I loved Kid Icarus for Nes. Still do! I was never really into Metroid back in the day. I spent so many hours playing that game. I remeber how call I thought the password thing was.

You forgot to mention that both had their excellent music composed by the brilliant Hip Tanaka. :)

Metroid played a huge role in making me a gamer, but since I've yet to find a copy of Kid Icarus to add to my collection, I lack enough experience to vote. :(

Kid Icarus II came out on Gameboy, same as Metroid II.

My vote goes to Kid Icarus. It's got your Greek mythology, shmup elements, and eggplant wizards.

Not enough games have eggplant wizards.

Man, getting turned into an eggplant in the dungeons was soooooo annoying. I rarely made it back to a 'hospital' before some random baddie snuffed my defenseless life out.

Anyway, I picked Metroid. I got that for Christmas the year I got my NES and me and my friends were completely engrossed by that game. We had a book of graph paper, and one guy would play while the other(s) would map out the area. There was no Gamefaqs to run to back then, Samus truely was alone on that strange planet of Zebes. It is an excellent game that will unfortunately forever remain in the shadows of it's younger brother (Super Metroid).
