    Default Strange Mario All-Stars problem

This blows my mind. My friend tried playing mario all-stars on my SNES the other day and said there was a screen saying it's illegal to copy games. So I go into the room to see whats up. Where you select what saved game to play, it was random graphics instead of the world number. So I figure the game is just dirty. When you would try to play one of the saved games, a copyright notice would appear in blue text. I laughed and cleaned the game.

So everything was working fine after that. Then I hear "the controls aren't working right." Now the game defaults to type B control and even if you change it to A, it still plays as type B in the game. This affects all 4 mario games.

Is there a way to completely reset the memory on this game? I seem to remember being able to do a "clear all" function on other Nintendo brand SNES games but I don't have the book with me. I have even gone as far as popping the game in and out with the power on and jiggling the power cord to try to erase all the data, but the battery must still be very good. I've been collecting for a long time and this has really got me stumped.

I hope someone can help me.

    Thanks in advence,
    Erik

You could likely just keep inputting random game genie codes until it erases your saves. Though, that might be very time consuming.

For me save games pretty much always get erased when I pull the cartridge out without using the eject switch, trying doing that with and without the power on.

See, i don't know if that would be enough to fix it. I already erased each saved game seperately and it didn't help.

I have a similar problem with Lufia II, and it frustrates me to no end. Sometimes the saves will just disappear, and other times they won't. My only theory is that the battery backup is just plain shot. I have no idea if this is fixable or not (I'm leaning towards no, though), so I'm not sure what else to tell ya. I feel your pain, though.

I wouldn't try hotswapping the cart in and out, but I would try turning the power switch on and off rappidly. I'm sure eventually it would wipe the data clean.

I searched high and low, and could not believe there is no clear all data code. Weird.

Remove the battery and reattach it...or even replace it...guaranteed way to wipe the data.

Or, you have a OMG!! R4re!11!! copy.

Yeah, it must have been one of those rare ones that came with the system. One of the ones that has the built in glitch on a 12 year timer.

Thanks for the help so far guys

I seem to recall a game save glitch with the first release of Mario Allstars that was corrected with the Player's Choice version... .. but I can't find anything on it now...

    ***EDIT***:

I found an old thread about it here on DP...

I had my copy of all stars do the same thing but all I did was plug it in and try and play it.

I do find that almost ever copy of all stars I have owned will not save correctly.

My guess would be to replace the battery, and fully clean the contacts of the cartridge and the console. Don't just use rubbing alcohol, really clean them.

It saves excellent. Its like the memory got corrupted when the piracy warning thing happened. I believe that was just because the game was dirty.

Its the controls that are screwed up. It's always type B even if you change it to A.

Thanks for the link to the previous post also.

There has to be a way to fix it. I remember my system was one of the first ones to include the game because my friend got one about a month earlier and it came with a coupon you sent in to get the game for free. It's worked fine for all these years though!
