Colony Wars: Red Sun is an epic game. Pure Genius, and a lot deeper than the previous two. I am surprised that there has not been any next-gen sequel
It would also be great as a film, or even better, a Tv series! The hard work has been done, and there is plenty of species and storylines to pursue just based on the games! Plus the ships are pretty cool too!
Most people think it's just another Star Wars rip-off, but I think it has defined the genre.
Now that Lexx and Firefly are no longer around, and Enterprise has gone, as has Farscape, I think it's about time they found other things to do for the genre, and this would be a great contender!
How about Defender or Galaga?
More recent sci-fi games that I like: StarCraft and Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force (I'm not talking of the sequel, though...). There's KOTOR too.
I would probably say PSO 1+2. Besides the addicting gameplay that is characteristic of most MMORPGS, I really like the whole PSO world. I feel that the integration between swords and monsters, etc. into a sci-fi genre was rather smooth.
Now that I think about it, Xenosaga is very sci-fi and it is also very good. I most enjoy the futuristic characters and how they intertwine within the whole society. Overall it feels very smooth in its Sci-Fi approach. It kind of reminds me of Battlestar Galactica in a way.
I didn't even think this thread was going to be about videogames!
I'd say Cosmic Encounter, with it's myriad expansions. Of course, it's been re-released so many times, after so many slight variations and tweaks, who knows which version is which or which is better/best? Nevertheless, as far as whatver versions I've played, it's by far the best sci-fi game I've played, electronic or otherwise. (In this case otherwise.)

I was a huge Sierra fan back in the day. Still am, they just don't make them like they used too. So, I am going to have to go with Space Quest (All of them). Roger Wilco is my hero.
I'd probably have to pick Elite.
For those who haven't played it, Elite is kind of like Grand Theft Auto in the way that you can go from planet to planet, wherever you want, trading with people and shooting a few. It's kind of like Pirates! in a way as well.
I was also huge fan of X-Wing and TIE Fighter and many of the following games that put you in the middle of the Star Wars universe, like Rebel Assault, Shadows of the Empire and Dark Forces. I also really like a lot of the newer Star Wars games, like Obi-Wan and Star Wars:Battlefront.
I also have to give props to Wing Commander. Man those games rules back in the day.
Star Wars Galaxies....
I had a signifigant role in leading the early stages of the rebellion, and I helped found a giant city on Dantooine. My girlfriend had a bakery there! Good times.

Dificult choices - but id have to put in a vote for the wing commander series (eventough I coulnd't finish 4 becasue of that photographing level) and privateer
i liked the plot in wing commander, it was enough to keep me playing . The graphics and other technical inovations they incorporated into the early games made them even cooler than the game next to it on the shelf at the store.
Privateer was real great - taking care of your self trying to get by - taking jobs and movieng the plot along - staying legal or not -
oh - i also have to mention dune II: the battle for arakis
great on the pc and sega genesis
but before those games i was realy into overlord on the pc - and was greatly surprised while parusing though the rarity guide on this site (looking at game pics) to find overlord on the NES (with worse graphics but still fun im sure)- im on the look out for it now -- check it out its a real fun game - building colonies- jugeling finances and running a war - it was one of my first games for the blasingly awsome 386 16Mhz 1meg ram pc i had HA HA HA
My nod and finger point goes to the Metroid series. Isolation, Atmosphere, Awesome Bosses and Music. Metroid Prime is favorite game this gen by the way.

Rebel Assault I & II are as good as it got IMO

Hmm...some of my favorites-
Starflight
Halo 1 & 2
Wing Commander
Metroid
Beyond Good & Evil
Check out the Kleppings!

I don't completely know if this is a science fiction game, but I think it is.
Starcraft, in my opinion, is the second best rts game of all time and the best sci-fi game. It pretty much defined the rts in the 90s (no, it wasn't C and C that did this), and it was a better staging point for online rts that Warcraft II. Amazing game.
An emotion as such tells you nothing about reality, beyond the fact that something makes you feel something.

I'm all about Starcraft-it's really the only sci-fi game I've ever gotten into.
I'd love to try Elite. It has a HUGE following in the UK, judging from the amount of coverage it gets in Retro Gamer Magazine-it was voted number 1 game of all time in their poll.
I have to back up the starcraft movement. It was the most polished rts I've ever played, plus it actually had a good campaign. Marine Rush!

I agree that Colony Wars: Red Sun is excellent at presenting a solid science fiction story in a well-designed mission-based game. I haven't played through Halo yet, though.
I also liked the first Colony Wars game, too, with its expansive branched mission/story tree. Depending on your performance in the missions you could hear a huge number of story variations. Neat stuff.

Gee, how did I miss this thread?
And more importantly, why has no one mentioned Anachronox!? It's a charmer in so many ways! I intend to download the [free] "movie" one of these days.

I actually thought of a board game first too, but only because I've been playing it quite a bit recently: Twilight Imperium, 3rd Ed. It's simple yet complicated. In order to win you have to have a goal, but be flexible enough to roll with the game as it throws obsticles at you.
Video game: Hmmm.
Asteroids is an easy choice as classic sci-fi fave. I even still hum the Buckner & Garcia "Hyperspace" now and again
Modern fare? Halo I guess. Loved the way the story was told. Loved how the Flood scared the pants off of me at first. I just really, really enjoyed the experience.
Time will be when the broadest river dries
And the great cities wane and last descend
Into the dust, for all things have an end
