Best type of classic game?

Maybe it's just me, but I'll take Raiden, 1942, Xevious, Giga Wing, or just about any other vertical or horizontal scrolling game where you can power up your weaponry over any other type of classic game.

Of course, I also like the whole Double Dragon, Final Fight side-scroller thing.

Hmm...I also like four player mayhem like Gauntlet or that first 4 player X-men game "Nothing can stop the Blob!".

Then again, Time Crisis and House of the Dead are a blast, especially in the hour before your movie is about to start.

Wait a sec...I also always revert to dot-munching and scenery eating games, like Pac-Man, Dig Dug and Mr. Do.

Okay...what is the best type of game ever?

Dungeon crawling RPGs... those long, boring adventures like Wizardry. I love those.

Yeah...nothing like finding a sword with a name like Arrick's Magic Blade of Banishment...Wizardry was a classic.

Infocom text adventures. Pretty much anything can be emulated, but not the imagination of a 12 year old on his Commodore. Man, I saw some wonderful graphics all in my head with those.

platformers. nothing beats the oldschool sonic and mario games. also fighters and beat em ups were great.

Prior to the 16-bit generation, nothing is greater than a nice, solid platformer. Once the Super Famicom came around, then came wonderful, polished RPGs. :)

Single screen "maze" games like Mr. Do!, Pac-Man and Frenzy.

I think puzzle or maze games age best. For older systems those are what I consistently still play.

I probably won't ever play Tony Hawk for Dreamcast again or any Madden for genesis, but Wetrix & Tetris just never get old =)

I'm a fan of the old sports games....Tecmo Bowl is still fun and so is NES open Golf...then again I also like sports games now and sports in general

I think it's probably easier to say what classic system games I don't like anymore. That would be mainstream sports games (wrestling, baseball, hockey, not weird sports like volleyball or teeter-totter bouncing in a circus tent). All other genres I like about as much as I did when they were new.

Pretty much what Sniderman said: Text adventure games like Zork and Enchanter.

Some of my greatest joys in gaming came from those text adventures. Couple of times I was able to quickly solve puzzles in the games that had my friends stumped for days. I got a rep among my friends and they came to me for help several times.

Lots of hilarity in those games too. One time, out of frustratiion, I decided to tell the adventurer to kick the bucket sitting next to him. The computer's response? "OK, if you say so...**You have died**". What? Aww dang!

The things some of my firends did with the game was also a source of hilarity. One friend of mine discovered that the phrase "Hello Sailor" had some kind of significance. So he went to every room in the game shouting "Hello Sailor!" It took him a while to figure it out and when he finally got it work he was all pumped up and proud about it. I had already figured it out by then but I kept quiet about it and let him have his moment.

I was the first in my group of friends to finish Zork III - well sorta. I got to the ending sequence and I had just one move before the grand finale. I enter the command and the computer - just - freezes - up. Oh no! I couldn't get the thing to finish. I rebooted the computer, tried it again and got the same results. I was crestfallen. I ended up writing a letter to Infocom hoping for some help. A couple months later they responded. It turns out I had to drop the sword and keep it in another room during the final sequence. I did just that and I finally was able to complete the game. By then, of course, my friends caught up with me and so my victory wasn't nearly as complete as I initially hoped.

Love those text games. Lots of good memories.

I really want to say text games like zork and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy because they're dead and will never be revived, but i've got to go with 2d sidescrolling run and guns like contra.

Any game that you can pick up and play without having to slog through opening cinemas or a training mode, two aspects of the current era that bore me to tears.

I like roguelikes, platformers, and shooters. I'm burnt out on RPGs, after spending most of 2002 playing them exclusively. I had just discovered emulation, you see, but, alas, I hadn't the money for a controller. Using the keyboard to play a Mario game was just masochism...

RPG's, platformers, beat-em-ups, and shooters for me. NOTHING beats a good 2D RPG as far as I'm concerned.

I miss old school beat-em-ups. The ones where the punks you just murderized flicker a few seconds before disappearing. Or when you're low on health, you pick up a hunk of meat to regain your hitpoints.

I wish SEGA would make Streets of Rage 4.
