can you play genesis cartridges on a megadrive system or vice versa?
Do you mean a Japanese Mega Drive or a PAL one?
Most MD/Genesis games pre-1993 are universal, though some 3rd Party games are not. From 1993-onwards, most 1st Party games had region coding, but again there are exceptions. 3rd part games are pretty hit & miss depending on the publisher.
Your best bet to play everything is to either mod your Mega Drive to add 50/60Hz and region switches, or to track down a Mega Key-type adaptor which has dip-switches to perform the same job.
Well i came across this guy selling a load of retro games, there was a load of pal megadrive games and also one called "burning thunder" by namco, but its for the sega genesis, box, instructions etc,
now all of the games worked on the megadrive except that one, so i'm thinking this is a US version, ntsc.......and it probably does work, but not on the uk pal megadrive.
Yeah, that's probably the case - it gets kinda confusing since there's no overall rule for MD/Genesis imports - some very late releases can be universal (eg Sonic 3D), while some early 3rd Party games (eg anything by Konami) are region-locked.
If you're not terrified of using a soldering iron, I'd recommend the double-switch mod - it's very straightforward as far as console mods go, and should let you play any MD/Genesis cart on a PAL system. Of course, you might not want to bother if it's just the one game but is well worth considering if you think you may get others in the future.
sorry to get off topic, but while this topic is here might as well ask.
If I laready own a genesis, should I pick up a JP megadrive? I really do not have any imported sonsoles besides a wonderswan color, and was wondering if a jap megadrive has any worthwhile titles that the US genesis does not have?
Thanks!
There's tons of great Japanese games, but you should be able to play them all on a Genesis without too much hassle. Get a Japanese MD if you want one for the sake of it, or just 'cos they're pretty cool
Watch out for Asian models though - they look very similar and are often described as 'Japanese' on eBay, but are 50Hz PAL systems.
