Default Passwords cracked? Road Rash, for instance...

The secret codes/easter eggs thread got me thinking...

There was a time a ways back when I was playing a lot of Road Rash on the Genesis, and started thinking about the password system... It was easy to see how your placement on the various tracks was saved, and I started trying to figure out the rest of the password too.

I figured out a few things, like what bike you owned (IIRC), your winnings total, and how Natasha reacts to you, but there were other things I never managed to decipher, like your money total (possibly vice versa with winnings total), and there were three bits that appeared to be a checksum.

Has anyone else tried to figure this out? Or for any other games? And if so, were you successful?

(My brother started trying to figure out the passwords in Survival Island on the 2600, and I mostly finished up the work years later; I documented it in the 2600 Connection).

I remember an old Nintendo Power had what amounted to a crack for 1943 passwords. I also remember figuring out the password system on TMNT 3 for GB enough to max out my hearts. No checksum or bit masking so it was easy.

The password system for Sonic and Knuckles with Sonic 1 locked-on has been cracked, so you can create your own 'blue sphere' bonus levels and adjust certain attributes (difficulty, floor colour, and so on).

Viewer can be found here (it's the first download link - ESE_SSView.zip)

I remember a couple of programs floating around for Kid Icarus and Metroid that allowed you to check off what you wanted and it would generate apassword for you. Can't remember where I saw them though....

Wasn't there one for Simon's Quest too?

I remember mucking about with passwords from bomberman 93 and coming up with a couple that had you with a lot of power at world 2, but with worlds 4 and 5 defeated ahead of you, and a variant off that too. It was neat seeing two worlds already down and out of the way before you got there

When I was at GameShark my coworker and I cracked the Blaster Master GBC code set-up. We could have any weapon, any amount, at any level we wanted to.

I technically cracked Sony's serial number set-up for their printing run digits, if that's anythign similar : )

Sounds familiar, but it's been too many years... Didn't that give you the super bike and tons of money or something like that?

It's only the nitial release of the FAQ, I have a LOT more research to do (especially on the launch year games, where it seems numbers were assigned in bulk rather than individually) but there's the main aspect of it.

The PS2 discs use the same sequence set-up, but a slightly different method since DVD games have a different 'print run' serial than the CD games. You can find these numbers along the edge of the CD, right after the circle of copyright info ends.
