    Default Favorite SegaCD Games...

    So.

I just bought myself a CDX at work for $10.

The thing is, I know NOTHING about the SegaCD.

So where do I start? What games are worth a damn? I know Working Designs released a few stellar RPGs for the system... I know there was a cool version of "NHL '94" released for it... But what else is out there?

Sonic CD is a really good game. Snatcher if fucking amazing but expect to pay through the nose for it. I think those will be 2 of the more suggested titles. I myself love them.

Snatcher just can't get enough love. I found a copy on Ebay in great condition for $50. The catch? Someone had written on the back of the manual. No big deal to me since it still looks beautiful on the shelf, plays great in my SegaCD and in Fusion, and didn't cost me an arm and a leg

I really liked both Ecco the Dolphin games back when I played them, though it's been years and the years may not have been kind to them (see also: Greendog). Mickey Mania was fantastic (what? Traveler's Tales doing a good game? Unthinkable!).

Rise of the Dragon was a censored port of the PC game, which itself was really a standard adventure game with a cyberpunk setting, and I still loved it.

If you liked Populous at all, then I can not stress the urgent need for you to pick up Power Monger.

Dune and Shining Force CD round out my recommendations.

Here is a thread that needs visiting/updating on the subject

Just to be helpfull in this thread (before it is locked), however, I'll toss you a few recs like Robo Aleste, Dracula Unleashed, Snatcher (go into it with low expectations, not sky high ones), Sonic CD, Rise of the Dragon, Final Fight CD, etc.

Hmmm, well, I'll give you mine personal favorites:

    Sonic CD--by Sega
Rise of the Dragon--by Dynamix--a pretty good "comic book" like mystery game. It doesn't compare to the likes of Snatcher though
Wing Commander--still pretty good, even with cartoon graphics
Snatcher--by Konami (good luck finding it for a fair, honest price)
Time Gal--(ditto on this one too)
Silpheed (your basic shoot-em up with some pretty decent polygon/wire graphics) --by Sega
Contrary to popular opinion, Digital Pictures made some pretty decent FMV games that any Sega CD owner should try out, here are a few:
    Sewer Shark
Night Trap (see "the game that helped to create" the need for the ESRB for yourself)
    Double Switch
    Supreme Warrior

Definately get the Working Designs games, Popful Mail and the Lunars are great, and you got a hell of a deal getting a CDX for $10.

Lunar, Lunar II, and Vay have their devoted fanbases but imo they're crap

I really wish Shining Force CD had more RPG elements in it rather than just fights and cutscenes.

Also, I REALLY wish Shadowrun had been released in the US. The more I see of that game, the more I want to play it in english. Oh Compile, why did you have to die? Hopefully the rumors of a translation project going on are true....

Congrats on the AWESOME deal for that CDX! Ive had my Sega CD since day one and still love it! Here's a my top favs for the system:

Lunar and Lunar 2 - Contrary to other posts, if you like RPG's these two are two of the best of the 16-bit era. They showed what they system was capable of in the right hands (especially Lunar 2: EB)

Snatcher - Again, awesome point-n-click adventure game from Kojima. Same goes for this about what the system could do in the right hands

Keio Flying Squadron - A mostly overlooked, but awesome, cute and fun shooter

Sonic CD - One of the best Sonics

Dracula Unleashed - FMV...but one of the best examples of it

Final Fight CD - Great port of the arcade classic

Here's a list of other good games to check out:

    Night Trap
    Time Gal
    Road Avenger
    Lords of Thunder
    Silpheed
    The Terminator
    Popful Mail

IF you wanna go the harder route and delve into Mega CD's, these are the ones I recommend:

    Urusei Yatsura
    Yumimi Mix
    3x3 Eyes
    Shadowrun

If you need more info on the Sega CD in general or about certain games and imports (Shameless plug coming up), you can visit my MSN group http://groups.msn.com/segacdfans

How come nobody ever mentions Robo Aleste when the Sega CD is brought up? It's fairly easy to find for 10 dollars complete and it's an Aleste title.

Yes. They did make some (one?) decent FMV games. Sewer Shark and Supreme Warrior, unfortunately, are more of the "laughable" variety.

Judging Digital Pictures Sega CD library just by itself (Hey! Maybe we should do a top 5 Digital Pictures list ;P): Double Switch is unique. I think it was the most successful gameplay wise of the FMV genre (not counting the Dragon's Lair style games). Night Trap isn't as good as Double Switch in my book, but it has significant historical value. Ground Zero Texas always came off as DP during a time when they had a bigger budget to play with (I'm sorry...that is the only positive comment I have). Corpse Killers is great...uhm...camp. My head hurts now. Why did I start this paragraph? I don't have the stamina to finish it...

Well maybe I need to take my Sega CD out of the closet and retry some of those games. I didnt even tryout Snatcher before I sold it to someone on this board a couple of years ago.

the lunar games are awesome same with sonic cd. but for some strange reason i like racing aces. i like all the different planes and the fact that i'm racing and shooting down the other planes. the upgrades are always fun to aim for. the only thing i hate about the game is that the ai seems to upgrade way faster than i can so it makes it hard to catch up to the quality of planes. i'm most likely the only person out there that likes this game.

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone. I'll be sure to check some of these titles out.

Oh. The person who sold me the CDX left the first "Lunar" game in there. No box or instructions, but hey... Free isn't too bad.

My favorites are Sonic CD, Snatcher, and Popful Mail. If you want me to pick my favorite FMV game, then that would be Sewer Shark.

They say that if you want a good laugh and like to see girls in sleepwear get Night Trap. But I can't confirm it since i'm still waiting for my copy to get here.

    Road Avenger x 20 bazillion

You won't believe that an FMV game can get THIS intense. Hell, it's one of the most intense games I've ever played, FMV or otherwise. Fabulous gameplay, great cheesy 80s-style anime, and even cheesier awesome Japanese butt rock with a guy trying to sing in English about being a road avenger or some such nonsense. :P

Dark Wizard's pretty good, if you like SRPGs. As long as you have the battle animations turned off, it moves along pretty well, and with 4 heroes and all of its hidden stuff it has a good bit replay value too.
