Default Best NES: Toaster, Top Loader or Generation Nex?

Which is the best for day to day usage? I have a refurbished toaster - new 72 pin and everything- but it is still partially blinky. People gripe about the video quality on the top loader. The Generation Nex is due out soon - but I am a bit concerned about having the cart connection on the front. Aren't the games going to be a bit loose - considering NES carts are the longest carts out there? I don't want to be playing a game and have one of my cats bump into it and have it short out.

Well, please come back to this thread in a few weeks... wait till CGE passes first so that those of us who preordered the NEX (including myself) can try it out.

You can't do much better than an AV Famicom and a cheap cartridge pin converter. Clear A/V output, support for wacky sound channels, 100% compatibility with all games, and toploading too!

Top Loader, I love my Top Loader, saves up space in my entertainment center and makes a great conversational piece for when guest come over

Now as for the NEX, the only thing I'm gonna wait for, is to see which games have the most problems with it (I.E. CastleVania 3 is one of the most common carts to have issues with new Fami-Clones)
These cartridges are dirty as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

I just use a toaster. If it plays the NES games thats all I need. No need to shell out more money just to see my cart sticking up verticaly.
I would like a top loader for saving shelf space, but nothing else.

    Default Option 4...

I think you should have included the PSP (or perhaps a GP32). Can't beat a handheld NES unless it's a Game Axe.

I perfer my top-loader but that's simply because i haven't had the time to replace the 72-pin connector in my Toasters. But if i replaced the headers i'd definitly go with the toaster. For todays modern game it's just to much work to change to channel 4 and it looks really shitty on a huge screen.

The toaster no doubt. Most because of the good memories I dont care much for any NES clones.

What's the difference between the top-loader and Toaster? I heard the top-loader has AV cords...

I love my top-loader.. but the video is a problem. Can't wait to hear how good the NEX turns out but I'll probably get one either way, it just looks so damn cool.

Toaster with 72-pin replacement. No contest.

It’s all about the toaster man. No matter what, I will always love the original NES. Personally I think the top loader is a piece of junk. Sure, it works all the time but the video quality is crap (anyone else have the faint vertical lines?). I will be picking up a Nex unit come September so hopefully it will combine the reliability of the top load with the better picture quality of the original. We’ll see….

I don't have a preference but I usually use the toaster because it's plugged in already.

Is the video quality on a toaster better than a top loader? I haven't used one in so long I have no clue. Also I don't feel like digging it out of the closet.

Toaster for me. As cool as it is to have a real Top Loader I'd still prefer to have the RCA jack option, plus it just reminds me of being a kid when i push the cart down and shut the little door.

Yep. The top load has rather washed out colors when compared to the original NES. I have never tried one but there are modded (sp?) top load units with composite outs. They often fetch big $$ and aren’t worth the effort. Thus the fact I’m buying a Nex this fall. I’ve never had many problems with my toaster, I have one for use with the Game Genie and one that plays licensed titles only. I rarely have any problems.

The AV famicom gets my vote too. I like the fact I can use the same AV plug for my AV Toploader/Snes/N64/GC It has a serial port on the side for cool Famicom peripherals( daisy chain 2 Arkanoid controllers is cool )

I am just fine with my NES toaster. I put a new pin connector in a couple years ago and it works great for the most part. Yeah, games will still get dusty and cause the system to blink or crash...but everything usually works fine if I keep it all clean.

I have played a Top Loader before...but it was on a very small, and very old TV. So, I couldn't really notice the washed out colors.

I only play on my Top Loader. Am I the only one who thinks the RF output on the TL is better than the Toaster? My TL is so much clearer and cleaner than my Toaster using the same RF box. The TL might have those FAINT verticle lines, but it sure does make up for it in every other way.
