Great topic. I remember my friend and I sitting down and playing through Pac-Land on the Turbo-Grafx. Not sure why we did it in hindsight. Gluttons for punishment I suppose.
There's two in the arcade Splatterhouse, although few people even realize that one of them is there.
The first one is the "electrical purple mist" that slowly fills up the stages from the left side of the screen. Just stay still in nearly any stage for a minute or two, and out it comes. The second is this blue orb: The orb seems to be a bit of a mystery, as it's rarely seen. It was mysterious enough that I devoted an entire page on West Mansion to it. Neither of these appear in the PCE/TG16 port, though.
Here's a pic of both the mist and a boatload of orbs attacking all at once:
