Default Gizmondo was released in the US today

So the Gizmondo was released today, guess we have another handheld failure on our hands. For whatever reason if you are interested in it you can buy it on gizmondo.com, or find a store near you!(cough) Anyways the real point of the thread: How long do you think it will last?

It may lack in developers and what not, but last time i checked the hacking scene, it's coming quite far with homebrew and what not.

    But yeah, its dead.

It's not. It's only available online, and retail partners will be "phased in" over the next couple months.

I thought it was already out here. My local shop had a load of Gizmondo stuff on the shelves but I never really paid any attention to it. Then they got rid of the Gizmondo stuff in about August. I may have heard there was a new version coming out soon. Is that right?

I noticed Gizmondo at a retailer in the UK and they are offering to sell it based on an interest free deal - they are obviously very desperate to shift these.

Unfortunately I see it going the same way as the Tapwave Zodiac.....shame really as the market could do with some healthy competition.

There is some Gizmondo stores in Westfield malls, there's actually one next to my house. I'm going just for kicks.

    Default Mall kiosks open

You can purchase on-line or at kiosks in a number of malls around the country. Unfortunately, they are dying malls concentrated in weird geographic clusters. In Southern California they chose Culver City, Palm Desert, and West Covina among others. Not sure why anyone going to those malls would be interested in a $230 handheld with no killer games, but I guess it's a novel marketing approach. I would actually pick one up if they had actually delivered some of the niche titles they promoted at E3, but as it stands the games are collections of shareware and some EA titles that have gotten poor reviews.

even CNN isn't giving it much of a chance

    http://money.cnn.com/2005/10/19/comm...column_gaming/

I don't understand why the EA titles are last years versions. Without games you really don't have a system. I don't see how anyone goes to pick up one of these over a PSP. If it was cheaper and had some decent games then I might be in. The Fathammer games I actually have on my N-Gage since they were released about a year ago as mobile cell phone games. Not bad games but not what you want to launch a new system with.

Hopefully a better price point and some decent games will help save this DOA handheld.

Actually the mall in West Covina is by no means dying and is very nice.

This thing will die quicker than the N-Gage.

The N-Gage died in under 6 months, this thing won't last longer than that.

Default It's considered a second tier mall...

I don't want to get involved in a 909 debate, but the Plaza at West Covina is what is called a second tier mall. They do have a Macy's as an anchor store, but compared to most malls in the Los Angeles and Orange County area, the $ revenue per square foot of space is significantly lower. They also allow non-mainstream shops to rent space. The only reason I point this out is that a mall like that is not likely to have tons of early adopters rolling through like a mall in downtown San Francisco, San Jose or even West Los Angeles might. The Culver City location is in a mall that used to be nice but is what I would consider to be less than safe at night nowadays. If they had gone less than a mile down the road to the Howard Hughes mall along the 405, they might have had something. Unfortunately, I'm sure the kiosk rent there would have been really high. Too bad Tiger squandered or wasted that $200 million last year because they will need at least that much to successfully market this thing for a few months.

Haha, give me a break. EB Games and GameStop have pulled it from the shelves, and are almost rid of the last stock of games left.

Wal-Mart doesn't sell it any more, in fact, I doubt any retailers do. No one EVER mentions the N-Gage except to make fun of it, and certainly not anyone in real-life.

    It's deader than the Dreamcast.

say what you want I look at it as being in intensive care. the n-gage is no success story but new games can be bought through online outlets. It seems the Gizmondo is starting where the N-Gage is leaving off.

Dude it comes with a camera, can opener, cork screw, magnifying glass, chinese finger trap, compass, fish deboner, jewel that glows when demons approach and a GPS how can it not fail?

I think theres even a couple games out for it too.
