TV with built-in games?

These plug n plays seem to be pretty darn popular. Do you think we're far from TVs with built-in games? I'm thinking some proven Namco classics like Ms. Pac Man, Galaga, Pole Position, etc., with a wireless game pad, or even played with the remote itself. It seems like an easy, cheap way to add value to a tube TV...I'm not thinking of the latest and greatest plasmas and LCDs, but rather the cheap kids room and kitchen types.

Has this been done before? I can only think of the never-released Ultravision (which actually didn't have built in games but instead a VCS cartridge port).

I bet we'll see them, perhaps from a couple off-brand companies, but I really doubt that it would ever become common.

I could see something like one of those TVs with built-in DVD players: when you insert a DVD, it plays the movie of course, but when you insert a game disc, the built-in console boots up the game. I guess they'd have to have a button you would press to get to the Xbox dashboard or PS2 memory management interface.

Just think, you could use your game controller to control the TV, and you wouldn't even have to open it up and swap out the insides to do it (like that guy who made the NES remote).

Man, I don't see this ever really happening on any kind of wide scale. Most TVs are made by chinese manufacturers that sell with recognizable brands (Like Magnavox, Philips, etc) .. and the margins are so tight, I doubt they'd add even $3 per unit to the cost in order to add in an obsolete console that would be a tough sell to most TV purchasers in the first place.

Could possibly find a fringe market.. but I still doubt it.

I think the future of cheap gaming will be 'games on demand' through broadband for network-aware consoles coming down the pipe (360 eventually through Live, Nintendo Rev, etc) .. you'll probably be able to go get old titles just like buying songs from iTunes.

I have a TV with a built in NES. The problem is that of cost. You don't want to put an expensive game system in an expensive TV because if one breaks, you're totally screwed. A $400 Xbox in a $800 HDTV would probably be $1000.00, but if either broke you'd be screwed. Having them individually is much better, in my opinion.

wayyy back in the 70s, magnavox pioneered the 'game-inside-the-tv' by placing an odyssey system(pong - not the one with overlays) inside the TV itself. ive searched far and wide for one, but have yet to track one down. i saw it in an old magnavox TV ad. ill see if i can get a scan and post it...

I'm not talking about building in a current console, or any kind of console actually, just a "TV games" type of thing. And I'm not talking about a high-end TV, just a kids room tube TV type of thing.
