I would assume it would have to be in a promotional case that ended up with a retail disc or be a pack-in of some sort (with a mouse possibly?).
dont know...i have two copies...both no bar code
rarity database says its mouse compatible...so thats a likely theory i guess.
Looking at mine (well 1 of 3 that I have, the other 2 are 2200 miles away from me) and it doesnt have a barcode either. All mine were purchased used. I bet this is one of those rare but really good blunders (City Crisis for the PS2 where they forgot to put the name on the spine also jumps to mind) where they forgot some of the big info. There was a Syndicate 'used' barcode on the back of the case and I bet for sales they just had a sticker on the shrinkwrap.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

I got pics of a brand new sealed one. No 'temp" barcode sticker was found; they simply used the barcode on top of the original white security seal that kept the game closed.
Seeing how we're 6 for 6 in no barcodes, I think it's safe to say this was never corrected.
thanks for the research guys!
interesting footnote i guess...
Thank you in return Qbert: It's good to know there's STILL stuff and trivia to find
