Removing Smoke odor from empty ps1 cases

I picked these up at a garage sale for free since the guy didn't want them. They're kind of smokey. I was thinking of taking out the covers and soaking the cases to get rid of that smell. I'd then use them for some disk only games. Do you think the soaking method will work?

The only two covers that I think are worth keeping is a King of Fighters and a Samurai Showdown cover. The rest are all sports titles. What should I do with the rest of those covers?

if you are going to use them for disc only games, I'd just toss them and use generic jewel cases...I don't see the point in keeping cases if they smell bad.

I've never dealt with anything that smells like smoke, but your idea is the best one I can think of. Go for it.

Ah.. removing smoke smell can be hard. But try cleaning it with soap many times, might work
We got a motorcyclehelmet and a jacket from my aunt once. Smelled like crazy, alot of smoke. We tried to clean it and it was laying outside for maybe 2 weeks, still had a strong smell hehe.

Is there anyway to remove the odor from the cover or instructions? The covers and instructions for Samurai Shodown III: Blades of Doom and The King of Fighters '95 might be worth keeping if I could get rid of the smell.

Good question. Febrize is a start. Outdoor aeration and limited sunlight could help. Come on you game cleaners, speak up!

This has happened to me many times. Jewel cases aren't nearly as bad as cardboard boxes!

If at all possible I'd just replace the jewel case.

My plan B is always a dose of a) Fantastik all purpose cleaner, b) Windex and c) a day or two of fresh air. You may have to repeat the process but this has done the trick for me numerous times.

I had a lot of Saturn games like that once. The cases were easily de-smellified by running them through the top rack of the dishwasher. Of course, the manuals/inserts still had the odor so upon reassembly I spritzed the CD tray with a little febreeze. After a few days of being closed up, the febreeze seemed to dull the smell quite a bit.

Here's an old trick I've used:

1. Find a box big enough to fit your smelly stuff in.
2. Put the smelly stuff in.
3. Put a small bowl of vinegar in.
4. Close the box.
5. Let it sit for a day or two.

Results vary depending on material and smelliness but it's worth a try. Some people have told me that baking soda works too.

And yes, you can use Baking Soda instead of vinegar.

Get actual cd cases and just take out all of the cover art and back art and such and put them in new cases.





Get a thing of Tag, tape down the button and just leave it on in a room full of your cases .

Thanks for all the info. I think I'll try the box with baking sode method. I might also try a few of the others like the febreze in the cd case. I'm using these crappy stuff as an experiment before I try to clean my Star Ocean the second story case and inserts. Does anyone know which would be better: baking soda or vinegar?

I was taking apart all the case for cleaning and found 1 game after all. It's Triple Play 2000. :/ Think any one would need any covers or directions? They're all crappy inserts for sports games, but if someone is trying to complete a ps1 library, they might want them. Or I could just throw away the inserts. The only ones I might keep are the inserts and instructions for the 2 SNK games I mentioned in one of my last posts.

I want to say thanks for the tip of using Windex. I got a Saturn off of Freecycle and is was pretty smokey. The windex helped. I'm also trying that baking soda tip. I don't know if it worked yet.
