I just scanned the front of the box as my scanner's bed isn't big enough to fit the whole insert in (it's barely wide enough, but would need to be longer). If you look closely you might see the surface of the plastic in front of the insert.

Yes, the MD cover's decent...but this is awesome!
Wasn't that pic on the side art of the US arcade cabinet? It seems familiar to me.
I can't say. I looked up the KLOV entry and it seems you can rule out the US cabinet (look at that cheesy marquee), but they don't have any images of Strider Hiryu (i.e. the Japanese release).

This could easily be a "re-imagining" by Capcom's increasingly refined artists in the early 90s. While the copyright date on the game is '89, the game artwork seems a bit more refined, like something from the mid-90s, and the box itself is better constructed than other games released for the x68K at the time (plus the other game box in this style I have is Super Street Fighter II' which dates later as well). I could be totally off-base on that point, though.

This is the cover, it has a UPC but it was colored over in magic marker. (A new UPC sticker for preowned games was placed on the plastic of the genesis cover, I assume this is why the original was blanked out.)

Well without having the barcode available, i would say that this is probably the Canadian version. If you can make out the start of the barcode at all and it starts with "069044" that would close the deal. In fact, I can tell you what the canadian Strider barcode should be:

    069044011120

I have seen a copy of Mercs that was the same way....Euro text on the back with Genesis name...and a Canadian barcode

Thanks for the knowledge, It had been getting a little weird because I could not find this version of the cover anywhere on the web. Are the canadian versions smaller runs, and are they always a different cover type than the US?

Strider should be an "arcade perfect" port on the x68000, as the main processor is the same, the sound hardware is equivalent, and the x68000 has plenty of RAM. What's more, Super Street Fighter II' was arcade perfect.

Yeah, Canadian covers will almost certainly have been printed in much smaller runs than their US/Euro equivalents.
I've seen around 15-20 Canadian covers that are noticeably different to the US release, mainly early black-box Sega releases. I've also seen othes that look the same as the US cover but have a multi-language Euro manual. I haven't spent much time looking onto it though, so there's probably a bunch I've missed.

Looking at the Classicgaming page on Strider, I see where the x68000 cover came from. It's the artwork for the PC-Engine version of Strider (much larger, though)!

Now I'm pretty sure THAT picture was the sideart on the cabinet.

That PC-Engine version looks gorgeous (I would expect no less). I should attempt to track that down.

Strider Hiryu was initially a manga by Moto Kikaku, printed in 1988 in the Monthly Comp Comics magazine. While the plot has nothing to do with any of the arcade, the storyline of the NES game is loosely based off the manga. Capcom was strongly involved in the creation of this comic, and eventually brought out the first arcade game after the manga had finished its rather short run. However, all appearances of Strider have always credit Moto Kikaku as the character designer. While Hiryu wears a flowing red mask in the original artwork, he never actually appears in this in the games - at least, until his appearance in Marvel vs Capcom and eventually Strider 2.

A manga? Wow, now that's info I wasn't privy to. To all those who disliked the NES version, you still suck. And this is more info to my pro-NES version argument arsenal.

    Cool link, Ed!

Ah, I seem to have gotten the timeline mixed up there on the manga. I'm not sure when the NES game is supposed to take place, or the arcade game.

I've yet to beat the first level of the NES Strider. I don't like that (I recently described it as a "shitty maze of shit"). I've also had some guy badgering me at length about the game every time I join IRC (not EFnet), so that also makes it less palatable to me at the moment.

On the other hand, I spent a good deal of time playing Osman/Cannon Dancer yesterday.

This game is sweet, and alongside Charlie Ninja it's one of the reasons I think arcade manufacturer Mitchell is so highly underrated.

People say the game rips off Strider...that's not really a fair analysis, as the game's director was the director of the original Strider. Isn't he allowed to borrow from his own work (legal implications aside)? I think so!

I'd definitely love to get my hands on an Osman cab. I don't know how much it'd cost, but I'll say right now I'd trade away my Stratovox cocktail and throw something else in there to get one...

It is approximately 5 years after the arcade Strider. Iirc, the first level is a bit of a pain, but after that the game starts to really rock. Anybody that's played through it that I've ever met has not regretted it. Although if someone is badgering you about it, I guess that could really turn you off.

Anyway, check out these pics. The Dos Strider I have is actually Chinese, not Japanese. I don't know which Chinese language it is, but my money's on Mandarin, from the few words I can make out. Could be wrong. Seems it is for the IBM XT/AT and runs on Dos3.1 512k of ram min, heh heh.

I guess I'll have to find a 5.25 drive. Anyone know where I can buy NEW ones (or at least old overstock if nothing else)? I may have to find some disks too because one disk's sealed case/sheeth thing is a bit bent. I should probaby back them up since they are from Abe Lincoln's day.

Did they ever make external 5.25 drives any smaller than a Volkswagon? I ask this because the floppy connector used on 5.25s are a different shape than 3.5s, and I'd like to avoid internal, and I don't want a Abrams tank-sized thing hanging around. Does Win XP recognize 5.25 drives?
