Removing Permanent Marker from N64 carts

I have tried these things:

Nail Polish Remover (Destroys textutre)
Rubbing Alcohol
Paint Thinner
Bleach

Does anyone know how to get it off?

Goo gone hasn't worked for me either... it also messed up the texture of the plastic.

goof off might work better and I don't remmeber it destroying the texture either.

In situations where Goo Gone is too weak, but Goof Off is too strong, I've used around a 10:1 mixture of Goo Gone:Goof Off with great, non-plastic-melting results.

I too have used these before, and I ALWAYS use them to clean a new system I buy.

For some reason they dont do a very good job for me removing marker, they take some of it away, but not all.

I use these a lot with my games. They distort the texture of the cart a bit, but I get all of the marker off of the cart itself. However, I found out the hard way about the labels on the carts.

The label was completely blacked out with permanant marker. I romoved the marker, but faded the label to almost non-existance. Be careful around the labels.

I use Isopropyl Alcohol - works fine every time..

BUT, make sure you dont slip and rub the label of the cartridge with the alcohol.. it will take off the print!!!

Basically, anything that works through abrasion will smooth out the often spackled texture of game carts. This includes the Magic Eraser.

But if you seriously can't get a Magic Eraser to remove Magic Marker... Weird, they're both magical.

Uh, anyway. If you seriously can't get a Magic Eraser to remove Magic Marker, you might need more elbow grease. Even isopropyl lifts up marker with elbow grease. Heck, with enough elbow grease you can remove Magic Marker with a spoon; it's just a matter of how much stress you're willing to subject the surface to. On the other hand, the marker might not be Magic at all; it could be something far more sinister. I think fabric markers can dye plastic? I really have no idea, but I have encountered nasty markings that seem recalcitrant to anything I throw at them.

That's true, I never thought about it being something different than Magic Marker. It could be?

There was a bunch of writing on a SNES console I had gotten, and I used that, it removed most of it, but there was still some faint markings on it.

Good choices, goo-gon works well on less deep makers and Magic Eraser works quite well but I always use a standard white eraser first and its worked everytime in a matter of seconds except for once when I think the plastic had been died somehow. For that I just replaced the marked back of the cart with a $1 sports titles back I picked up, good as new. Seriously you wouldn't even think about using one normally I just happened to have the two on the same table when trying and failing to remove permanent marker from a Quest 64 rental cart with Goo-Gon and thought why not and sure enough miracle, it came right off in seconds literally, amazing.

Mineral spirits is a sure fire way to get permanent marker off of a cart. It never distorted the plastic on this end, but you had better be SURE you do not get it on the label. For labels, it depends on the game. If the label is a glossy finish (Some Colecovision, SNES...etc) you can actually use Windex to remove marker/pen. I had a SNES game that someone wrote their name on with pen...right on the label. Windex took it off immediately, without doing any harm to the label. I of course wipe the windexed area off with a little water and dry it...just to be safe.

I've said it before.. but this is the ONLY thing I use to clean anything on carts and consoles anymore.. and it hasn't failed me yet:

Orange Waterless

..No.. I don't sell it or own the company.. it's just that good. It's kind of expensive by the gallon.. but it goes a long way. The "orange" cleaners you can buy in the stores aren't the same either.. trust me.

Only thing is.. this stuff is very pungent.. and "orangey". On plastic it doesn't matter that much because it works quick, and you can wipe it off before it permeates the plastic. It is somewhat "oily" however and even can give a "gloss" to plastic if you so desire by "buff-wiping" it off.

Believe it or not.. once you get used to it's properties I've even used it on gentle items like black SNES manual covers to remove stubborn label goo.. you just have to be quick about it before the oil base penetrates the black ink and soaks into the paper.

A real good, fine mist atomiser for spraying is a must.

It can be found at most janitorial supply stores.. accept no substitutes.. because there are none.

I just use a pencil eraser. It gets the magic marker completely off the cart.

I just use a pencil eraser. It gets the magic marker completely off the cart.

Just tried this and yeah, it works pretty well. I got about 99% of the magic marker off the cartridge.
