I score'd a copy of Tapper for Colecovision off ebay last week This has got to be one of the coolest foldout instructions ever.
Anyone else have some favorite game instructions?

Hmm? I really dug the instruction book that came with Pitfall! II - Lost Caverns by Activision for the Atari 2600. It was like a diary if I remember. It just added to the overall feel for the game, it really got me into it.
I love the way the GTA manuals are.
The fallout manual is really nifty.
The vault dwellers guide I do belive.

I just like when they are in color
I like the fold-out for the NES satelite; It shows a lot of Nintendo's products in it.
The Activision 2600 manuals are my favorite. They all have some kind of theme, depending on the game.
Of course, all the Engrish in the early NES manuals warrants some recognition too.
Anybody remember which instruction book this came from?
"Capture special magic items to help you burst the beasties!"
ultima exodus and its cloth map was super neat, always wanted to get avatar with its map and ankh.
star tropics gets an honorable mention for its "letter"
dragon warrior3/avatar/final fantasy for the nes were neat for thier hintbook/manauls
and thats all I can think of for now.
I was absolutely in love with the manuals for Zelda and Zelda II. The gold cover. The color illustrations. I literally carried them around with me as much as possible.
Sigh, I've got the crappy two-game pack, not an original boxed Fallout...will have to add that back onto the list of "games to get," then.Originally Posted by Nez
The original manuals for Akumajo Dracula (that's Castlevania) games hold a special place in my heart, certainly.
Gotta agree with Blitzwing, the cloth map and the chunky pasteboard-like books for Ultima III are awesome.
I'll have to think this over...I can't think of anything right away, but I've got a number of games to think about...will say that the manuals for the Mega Drive Phantasy Star releases are great
The japanese N64 games are cool, they have a card with a big image of an N64 controller and then descriptions of what each button does.
The manuals for the old NES games like Metroid, Zelda and Kid Icarus are pretty cool, with the stories and cartoony pics at the begining
What was so special about that one?Originally Posted by Dimitri
I like Rad Gravity's manual. The comic inside of it.
Old PC games, especially for adventure games used to be absolutely brilliant and usually had other things in the box.
Not as old as the ones I'm thinking of but Starship Titanic had great content. The whole manual and also the in-flight magazine were funny and well written by Douglas Adams and had relevance to the game and the inclusion of 3D glasses for no apparant (or I've forgotten) reason was good too.
it's not classic, but the manual for band brothers is pretty original, its a series of posters advertising each part of the game to tell what it is. i mean, real posters you could put on your wall, not a book which has pages that look like posters or anything.
The Odyssey instructions were excellent. Interplanetary Voyage stated you're an astronaut in space on a mission....
VCS Activisions were my faves as well.
Lynx fold-out instructions are cool.
Star Saga 1 and 2, although it was more for the game and not instructions.
Quest for the Rings's instruction manual looks pretty cool.
KC Munckin is awesome merely for the 'program your own maze' instructions.
Dude, they should have seriously put Kissinger and Nixon in their own reality/sit-com show. It would be like the odd couple.
Nixon: Is that chairman Mao on the phone?
Kissinger: Yes, but you can't speak to him, you're too drunk right now.
Does the Earthbound guide count? Cause that thing was awesome!
