When I saw the pics that was the first thing that bothered me. GBA carts stick out of it. NO!!!! Why oh why.
Notice they've also changed the power supply from the SP/DS one to the Micro one. And also different headphone socket, possibly can plug in microphone headset?
If they stick out, why is that curved section cut out for?
I'm sure it doesn't, and they just didn't insert the cart fully. Though then you got to wonder how the cover is secured if it isn't inserted like a cartridge...
there's also no steps in the sides of the DSlite or the insert like the GBA carts have, but if you do some dimensional comparisons, the GBA cart is going in further than the depth of the white insert...
i.e. look at how far the gba cart goes into the socket. You can barely see the bottom of the nintendo logo, well if you look at how long the remaining portion of a gba cart is, that length is longer than the length of the insert. thsi omparison can be done by looking at the little square chunks taken out of the sides of the GBA cart and white insert...
conclusion...I don't know.
from the looks of it, a gba cart can only go in as far as the skinny part of it. once it steps up to be wider, i.e. the last 3/16" of the closed end of it, it can't go any further.
but I do get you on the curved cutout part in the DSlite... why have it, or have it that big, if it isn't made for the pullout tab on the gba carts?

The curved section might be to remove the cart-plug thingie. I don't see how you would remove it any other way.
Once I saw this picture, of the back of the unit, I was convinced that the stylus would intersect a GBA cart if both were in at the same time. And even if they didn't (and don't) it would be mighty close.
Edit: if you look at the bottom of the Lite unit to the beginning of the port, there is a 1mm depth or so. The tabs on the sides of a GBA cart wouldn't fit in them, so maybe the cart slides in as far as the side tabs. Which would still leave it out about 3-4mm. Which is less than the bottom image shows.
Edit two: The cart-plug thingie is called a "Connector cover" in Japanese. I just now noticed it. The second image says that the GBA cart will stick out 1mm from the Lite unit. Huh.

Yep, that picture of the back is the clincher. GBA games will stick out at least 1/4". Up until you mentioed the stylus, I couldn't figure out why it was done this way. Gotta wonder how they couldn't find a different place for the stylus.

I just looked at a GBA cart, and saw the groves on the back stop about where they do on the Connector Cover. Meaning that it would stick out like shown in the second image.

So unless the new stylus length is half the width of a GBA cart, the stylus slot would prevent the GBA cart from going any further.
Until I see it, I just don't believe it. It wouldn't make it possible to carry around the DS Lite with a GBA cart it in at all times, because it would stick out, get broken, etc.
It isn't the way Nintendo do things.
Edit: Don't get me wrong, I do buy into the pictures above, but I'm just a bit stunned. We'll see.
