Yes. It was meant as a westerners introduction to RPG's. Or some kind of nonsense like that.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

Its Japanese name was Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest. So yeah.

It wasn't made in the US; it was just made FOR the US.

By the way, Final Fantasy 7 isn't really more difficult at all than Mystic Quest.

I have always remember this game being super hard, though i beat it when it first came out and i didnt use any strategy guides it took me probably 3 months to beat. i would probably have to play it again to judge how easy it is. btw, i don't think square made this as a game to ease americans into rpg's, i alway's figured it more as a budget title that square tryed to produce, more like and adforable rpg, becuase this game was like 20$ new, where as most rpgs were 79.99 back then.

I remember having a tough time beating that game too, because for some reason I didn't realize carrots (or whatever it is) refilled your MP. So bascially I was playing the game without being able to refill my MP once. Made it a little bit trickier.

In a way the battles remind me of a battle in fire emblem, only without all of the strategic moving and armies.

    ... really?

FF:MQ was the very first RPG I picked up. I beat it in three days, over a weekend rental.

    I guess I'll keep FF7PC stored, then.

Im not say'n ff7 is hard,ye i did have a few problems against one or two bosses but it was'nt difficult but on mystic quest it seemed to be really easy from start to finish.

The only problem i had on mystic quest was understanding what some of the items was as i had no instructions cos i was play'n a rom version on my wild card.

The only problem I had in the game what on the fog covered ship. I got stuck there for over a week. Other than that I shot straight through.
After I beat it I got online to read reviews of it & I came across a history of the game. It stated it was aimed at children & new RPGers. I dont know how true that is but it sure seemed like it to me.

The game was made (quite likely at NOA's behest) after Nintendo's attempts to promote RPGs (Dragon Quest/Warrior and FF) had essentially failed on the NES, and weren't looking too hot on the Super NES, either.

(Also, it's my experience that the term "USA" refers to a game made for the US when it reaches Japan. It's not overtly official that the moniker is there to disparage the States, but everyone certainly believes it.)

Well, for what it's worth, FF7 is much, MUCH longer. Both from the fact that there's more game content and because even on the highest speed setting the battles still aren't as fast-paced as they are in Mystic Quest (even if you didn't include the entry and exiting loading in the comparison, they're not as fast, sadly).

But yeah, FF7 is mind-numbingly easy. And for what it's worth, I played both games for the first time around the same time, possessing the same knowledge, experience, and skill with RPGs, and in the end, the difficulty of both is extremely close.

What correlation is there between FF7 and MQ? They were released 5 or so years apart from each other.

OK, I admit it. I've never played MQ. Is it any fun? Though I'm not RPG expert by any means, I never thought of it as a difficult genre (at least square stuff). Once I played FF6, every FF game I played after that (4-9) was cake (excluding FFT). Even as a kid I thought only the last bit of Dragon Warrior was difficult (I remember this girl at school drew me a map of the dungeon...from memory)

BTW, again is MQ a fun game?

Just the fact that people will often call Final Fantasy 7 the greatest game ever made and trash on Mystic Quest for being so easy and simplistic in the same breath irks me. :P Not that it's happening here, but I just felt like throwing that out there when the topic creator seemed to be suggesting that Mystic Quest was so significantly easier than 7 and the others.

As a whole, the Final Fantasy series has all been quite easy in comparison to most RPGs, and considering they've been dumbed down occasionally for the US market (like in the case of FF2/4), the matter gets even worse. But Final Fantasy 7 really marked the turning point, I believe, when the game became so fixated on the plot that the gamer didn't want difficult battles and puzzles hindering their ability to progress the story at a rapid pace. While I have more experience with Final Fantasy 7 than the later titles, I'd say that all of them have been extremely easy, so gamers should think twice before bashing Mystic Quest for the sole reason that its easy if they happen to also believe those later titles are brilliant.

I was under the impression that FFMQ was marketed, and targeted as a 'kid's' game.

MQ has been tagged as the worst FF ever. FF7 has been tagged as the best FF ever (which is FAR from the truth - every FF has its good things, but FF7's 'greatness' doesn't come from the game itself, but from the fact that it tore down the notion that RPGs were boring and made them popular. And that sissy Sephiroth.).

FF:MQ is relatively easy, but the dungeons are kinda long. You don't encounter random enemies and can earn experience and win items by clearing out special areas that are nothing but monster fights. It's a really fun game, just don't expect a masterpiece or the difficulty of, say, the Ultima series.

And it -was- targeted at kids. I think the manual made me feel that.
