Three big-picture PS3 predictions from OPM

John Davison, editorial director for Ziff Davis Media's Game Group, penned three predictions for the PlayStation 3 launch in the April edition of Official PlayStation Magazine. Here's a quick summary:

1. Launch: "November in the United States" and "it won’t be a penny more than $399.99." (Because Sony's in big trouble if it cedes two holiday seasons to the Xbox 360. Plus, Microsoft has created a strong pricing precedent with the Xbox 360.)
2. The Dualshock 3: The boomerang ain't gonna fly. It's got no room for a battery pack. The new controller will likely look a lot like the PlayStation 2 controllers.
3. The games: Only a few games will be available at launch. Most of them won't utilize the full potential of the PS3. (We'd say that none will. It's just not possible until developers have more practice creating software for the PS3.) Davison writes, "the real jaw-droppers on the system aren’t going to be shown until E3 in 2007."

1.) Makes sense. Sony has everything to loose and nothing to gain from making the PS3 more expensive than the 360.

2.) This rumor has already been blown out of the water several times in the past few months. The controller shown will be the controller sold. Embarrassing for a guy at OPM to make that mistake.

3.) Way to go out on a limb, OPM. Why even make this point when it's common sense. It's like saying, "We think the price of a PS3 will go down as the system ages. Expect a price drop in 2008.". They have some smart guys writing over at OPM.

That is kind of the whole point of a Forum. Discussion. This is Modern Gaming and right now there's a lot going on, it's the start of a new gen. Makes prefect sense to me.

Of course we could stick to "My system has a bigger penis then your system" fanboy rantings if you like.

The only one I'm fully inclined to believe is the third one. The second one feels like a 'maybe' to me...the first one doesn't seem likely at all.

I've never cared for "Johnny England" in the Ziff Davis bundle of publications but from time to time he says something with substance, such as this.

Sony themselves has said at some events since last year's E3 that the boomerang controller they showed was a development concept. Now if that was the truth or they were just backpeddling around a huge design screwup is anyone's guess - but at least they're responding to the reaction of their user base. Just the same, that controller design hasn't been seen much since.

Actually in many articles they've stated that that if essentially the final design, but it may under-go minor adjustments before it is released.

At my store we were told it's launching in November and even have a picture of the system and the bommerang to advertise it.

It's a win-win situation: They change the controller, and it's probably for the better. Or, they don't, and they told the truth... Now that I think about it, it's also a lose-lose situation, but I was just trying to look on the bright side.

I have absolutely no clue as to why the PS3 team would have thought the Boomerang controller was a good idea. The DualShock is an incredibly intuitive and easy to handle controller with two generations behind its belt. The Boomerang just looks awful.

I think missing this holiday season would spell doom for Sony. I know I'm getting a new console come next holiday season, and if the XBox 360 is the only one out there than so be it. I'm not dropping another 6-700 dollars (CAN) on a system that will likely be almost identical in terms of game library.

That said, allow me to say again, don't diss the boomerang until you've held it. If it's anything like my old Apls PSX controller, you're really going to be suprized at how comfortable it is.

It's true that it looks like it could be comfortable, but that will never stop the Bat-a-rang jokes. Even if it were to become the best controller ever it's still a joke.

Aint that the truth. I remember a little while ago trying to refute someones claim of, "Sony doesn't hype anything, the media and fanboys do."

So I went to www.playstation.com and clicked on North America. And then I clicked on news. And then I read the popup that you get when you do so.
