Default Which games' value "shocked" you originally?

Usually, when one enters a new system, and starts buying a ton of games you start to get a feel of which games goes for what. Which games on which systems whose price value shocked you? Or, shocked you not that they were pricey, but more expensive than you thought? And if you bought said game(s), how much did you pay?

For me, I have two SNES games that come to mind, and they're both Capcom games.

-Mega Man 7: Seems very hard to find this for 20 or under in good condition, which I thought it would be going into it. Ironically, I recently found a complete copy for 25 and jumped on it.

-Final Fight 3: Wow. This game goes for a ton more than I thought. It seems to rachet over 30 every time.... luckily, I got mine for a measly $15 bucks. I thought this would be a $20 game, tops. Was I wrong.

The only one I can't comprehend is World Of Outlaws Sprintcars 2002 for PS2. Someone please explain to me why this outdated racing game sells for $50 - $60 on Ebay.

Dragonball GT Final Bout. Such a terrible game, I don't care whether it was rare or not, that game was garbage. I do feel bad for all those people who payed $150+ for that thing, then came the Atari re-release which destroyed the value of the original for some odd reason.

Border Down for DC. I now wish I'd picked up a copy originally.

EarthBound on the Super Nintendo. I'm not one of those EarthBound bashers, I enjoy the game and it's a cool little variation on how the majority of SNES games were packaged and sold, but man. About five years ago I picked up a totally complete boxed copy for $90. Now days it's very common to get $200 - $250 for a boxed copy. (I sold mine last December here for $180) I've sold loose cartridge only copies, for as high as $70, one for $54 had heavy label damage! Now it's a cool game to have and a fun game to play (up until towards the end with all the slowdown) and a really nice package to own - but it's NOT some uber rare game. In fact I've felt for about a year now that it's currently as valuable as it will ever be - only one way to go, down. Although when the value goes down I'm sure less people will be willing to sell them.

You know what's funny, when I was still in electronics retail I was talking to my XBox rep and some redneck guy was listening to our conversation. And then he asked a question about what was coming out on the XBox soon and the XBox rep showed him the XBox running in the kiosk and started talking to him. And eventually the guy said the ONLY reason he bought a PS2 was because of that World of Outlaws game and those crappy ass NHRA drag racing games. XBox rep: "you are correct sir, we don't have any games in those series." Another example of how variety of games on the PS2 moves consoles.

Not content to continue using my copy while under supervision, a few months ago, my stepbrothers wanted their own copy of Pokemon Box... I went to check PokemonCenter.com, and it was no longer available. So, I swallowed my pride and checked ebay... my heart sank when I saw the insane prices that this "game" has climbed to, and so I informed their mother that I need another option (I'm not paying the going prices for something they won't take care of... if I could have gotten another one for $30, that would have been fine).

I had contemplated giving them my copy before I was forced to check ebay, but now... no chance in hell. (call me what you will)

Another vote for Border Down. I was as surprised as everyone else when the value of that one doubled (or quadrupled, if you've got the SegaDirect package) overnight. The normal version recently sold on ebay for over $90, even.

Hell, the normal edition even got a second print run, no less!

Firefighter F.D.18 also surprised the hell out of me when it was going for over $100, though it's since fallen way back down to ~$25.

I don't know if this counts, but I was pretty surprised when ESPN 2K5 came out at 20 bucks.

Games that I see a lot of for cheap that surprise me (since they should all be purchased on sight): Jet Grind Radio, N2O, Tempest X, Beach Spikers Volleyball, Wipeout 3

Geez, Aero Fighters for the SNES anyone?

Why Air Cars cost over $300 on ebay? THE DAMN GAME SUCKS!

Oh yeah, then there's Radiant Silvergun which isn't rare at all, but cost over $100 on ebay. The game is waaay overrated!

They all shock me. Either because they're so expensive or because they're so cheap. But I guess Radiant Silvergun is one of the most shocking. You'd think the CD was made of pure gold, the way that people act whenever it's mentioned.

I remember back in the day when StarWars and Manic Mansion came out for the NES. I was stood in Toys R Us and distinctly remember my Dad's eyes nearly popping out when he saw that MM was about £60!! I've still never played the game to this day. Iirc, StarWars was about £50. This was the first time I'd seen £50+ NES games.

And then about 5 years ago when I finally looked into getting a Neo after all these years. Those AES cart prices for the more desirable games are a little shocking. Thank God for MVS.

Damn it, who stretched the thread?

I remember my first shock--my first real encounter with
video games having value. It was back in 1999,
and I just got a Virtual Boy. I was having fun with it
and decided to see what there was to find. Thanks to
the miracles of the internet, I came across a VB webring.
One of the sites had a trade list, and I just happened to ask
how much Insmouse was. Hehe. I was pretty surprised when
I got the e-mail back, saying I could have it for $500. Maybe
    it was $400; I don't remember.

Can Tron2005 and Fighter17 truncate the damn links in their posts? Tron2005's isn't the offender honestly but it's good to learn early.

I never cease to be surprised at the price of Super NES RPGs. Regardless of whether they're boxed, mint, or loose, or with ripped labels, they're ALWAYS expensive.

The real problem is that their value isn't reflective of the supply. I went to a flea market this weekend and there were LOADS of copies of FF2, FF3, Super Mario RPG, the Mana games, and they were all super expensive. I was at a local store selling loose copies of FF2, FF3 and Mario RPG for $99.99 each x_x

No offense David but their link wasn’t two pages long. In this case you’re being a bit of a bully.

To answer the post my first case of gaming sticker shock came from Final Fantasy III. I went to buy it new back in 1995 (or was it 1994) and it was $79.99. For a SNES game that was not cheap.

My first collecting sticker shock came from Metal Slug for the AES. I think it went for $1200 back in 1999/2000 on eBay. I had never seen a game go for so much.

Another example of someone paying an insane amount of cash for a game that, on the outside, is worth about $300. But if it's the last game you need, suppose any price is OK.

Glad I got mine at the flea market for $5
