Default Old school new school gamer!

Last night I'm playing Oblivion and my 4 1/2 year old son comes into the room with a blank pad of paper and one of those plastic letter and number stencils used for making signs and stuff.

He sits down on the floor and after a few seconds he looks up at me and says "look daddy, I made a name!"

    He'd randomly stencilled NES.

    Default Cool

Now if you can just get him to yell SEGA

On a side note, my 7 year old asked me about the best game making companies and he thought since Atari was making games when I was a kid that they must be better than Nintendo..

    How do I explain that?

My son enjoys Donkey Kong or Circus Atari just as much as Animal Crossing. I guess. He's had this stuff around him all his life so in a way he doesn't really draw any distinctions between the old and the new. Good for him.

When my crumb-crunchers became interested in the Genny they weren't quite literate yet and couldn't clearly hear what was being said ("SAAAY-GA!") on the startup screens. So for awhile every time I fired up a game of Sonic or Shinobi the kids would sing out loudly "LEH-GO!"

My five year loves sonic the hedgehog (the newer versions, has not played the genesis ones), in fact the other day she says when she grows up she wants to make sonic the hedgehog movies. I guess we'll have to wait and see .

I have a half dozen old Sonic cartoons on VHS.

But of I make a comment like "Did I DO That?" in my best Urkle voice they just don't get it...

I have two young boys, one 5 (almost 6), and one 3. They sometimes watch me play various games, from something like Kameo on the 360, to Bonk's Adventure on the TG-16 to Bug! on the Saturn. Sometimes they will try to play a certain game. My 5 year old really likes Jurassic park for the Genesis. He loves it when the T-Rex says, "SEGA".

Anyways, it's just kinda amusing to see these kids see video games from all different kind of era's and not think much about it. So far, my kids haven't said anything about graphics being better on any particular system. They just see the games on the screen and don't really consider that they were made at different times for different machines. To them, the only difference is the controller that you have to use.

My 3 year old likes this Xbox Live game called Feeding Frenzy. I actually don't let them play games too much, and they really don't want to play, but sometimes they want to watch me play.

My 3 year-old daughter can name all of the main characters of Sonic the Hedgehog ("wobotnik," so cute!) and loves to watch me play.

Soon she will become my dark apprentice!
