Default US: PS2 is now $129.99! - Official Price Drop!

Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. today announced that it has made its PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system more affordable than ever throughout North America. Effective immediately, consumers can purchase the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system for a suggested retail price (SRP) of $129.99/$139.99 CND. The company expects this latest price move to fuel consumer demand even further.

PlayStation 2 is the most popular gaming platform in North America, Europe/PAL territories and Japan/Asia, the only gaming platform to enjoy such widespread global success. To date, more than 101 million PlayStation 2 units and approximately one billion pieces of software for the PlayStation 2 have shipped worldwide, making it the fastest-selling gaming platform in the world. According to The NPD Group, PlayStation 2 continues to lead console unit market share with 55.6 percent in the U.S., more than double of any other console on the market to date. PlayStation 2 also leads on the software front with nearly a 70 percent lead over any other competitor when it comes to software titles available at market in March *.

"While we continue to innovate and design groundbreaking new products, we remain dedicated to our long-term vision for the PlayStation 2 platform," said Kaz Hirai, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Now even more consumers, as well as casual gamers, can experience what the PlayStation 2 platform has to offer -- an unrivaled combination of the largest selection of software, a growing community for online gaming and one-of-a-kind accessories such as EyeToy -- at a new value price."

Sony Computer Entertainment America plans to support this new pricing initiative through marketing activities covering print and online advertising, and in-store merchandising support. Print advertising breaks on April 27th and will reach millions of readers nationwide through placements in a variety of daily newspapers including the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times and Philadelphia Inquirer. Online advertising will also begin on April 27th on sites such as AOL.

I'm surprised that they still haven't dropped the price of the original xbox.

Considering the horrible component contracts thay have, it doesn't surprise me. I'm surprised there hasn't been a redesign released though, to compete with Sony.

I'm happy to see a price drop. I keep telling myself to wait on a PS2 until it hits $99, but I may just jump in and buy it at this point. I've got some games I bought to play, just waiting until the right time to buy a system. $20 cheaper is nice--I could get a set of component cables with the savings perhaps.

Of course, I could always hold off longer and throw that $130 towards a PS3.

    Argh. Too many choices.

Why would you want a shitty slimline that can't be modded, have a hard drive put in, and has LESS compatibility than the regular PS2? You can get a good, NON-shitty version of the PS2 on eBay for far less than $130.

The slimline feels like a cheap plastic toy that's too easy to break. I've rather have a modded PS2 w/ HDloader and homebrew than that shit.

Because its more durable than most models of the original PS2, no one ever used the hard drive attachment pretty much meaning it won't be missed, not everyone cares about modding a system to play Japanese imports or pirated games, and people would rather have a durable, brand new, smaller PS2.

Yeah it can. Xizer doesn't know what he's talking about. I was looking at PS2 mod chips last week and there are plenty available for the slim model.

Probably be easier to just pop one of those flip-top cases on it. I don't know how well they work though.

But back on topic. I'm surprised they lowered the price already, considering it still sells a quarter-million units every month.

    No PS2 for me then.

i want a second ps2 for my bedroom, and i may as well get a slimline to have one of each physical variation.

i wont buy a new one, and i wont spend more than 100 dollars on it... my chances have now increased of finding one at the price im willing to pay.

Any price drop is cool with me. Hopefully that'll bring the price of pre-modded systems down a bit, too.

Flip top cases work great, I can vouch for them on the slimline.

I was hoping it would drop down to $99. I have been wanting to pick up a nice slim PStwo to put downstairs, and then bring my 5 year old PS2 up to the bedroom, but I suppose I can wait a bit longer. I can understand why they only dropped it to $129, seeing as how sales are still very good.

    My store's got the PS2 for $129 with a $30 mail-in rebate, dropping it to $99.

This is good news for me although I have recently bought a used slimline since my NEW one was stolen a few months back

I might pick up a new slimline later this year , but if the used one I got is still in good working order I might pick up a 360 once it gets a price cut.

Sony never actually needed to drop the price.

    Better than nothing.
