Uh, no, console sales have been driven by games and price for 20-some years. Otherwise how do you explain that the best selling consoles have NEVER been the most powerful? Oh processing power moves the market FORWARD, but it doesn't make winners. And the fellow who pointed out that the PS2 etc. led the market without the bar-none highest graphics is missing my point; home console sales (amongst other technologies) have been driven by processing power for 20-some years.
Sorry, your argument holds no water.

Oh yes, thats brilliant! This better work for the FPS games also. Now we need some other gun shooters, c'mon Sega, or maybe Time Crisis or Point Blank would be lovely. I notice that add-on comes with an analogue thumbstick too. Combined with the nunchuk that makes one stick in each hand as per this gens consolesOriginally Posted by THATinkjar

So I was thinking about the ps3 and how weird its going to be to not have all three this time around, since I wont be getting it..
Then I realized...
I can get a premium xbox360 and a Wii for the same price as a ps3 and an extra controller.
Ha...
Oh, that lightgun looks sweet. I just hope it doesn't become a trend that each game requires a different kind of attachment.
Okay, so IGN's E3 section has a listing for a next gen N-Gage, believe it or not. However, when I click the link it goes to a 404 page. Maybe they'll fix it later so we can all get a good laugh.

They were bashing the shit out of the revolution for a while.. but after watching the press conference, there's not ONE of them who isn't planning on getting a Wii on launch day. They all think that it's going to be the best thing ever. Now they won't shut up about that.
So, whatever ideology you have stuck in your head.. you lose. =) And I don't have to dream about saving my princess, the new Paper Mario will let me do that. Booyah.
Lord, forgive me, 'cuz I know this is gonna make me sound like a GameFAQs noob, but I just can't help myself: Nintendowned!Originally Posted by odyeiop

I've just been reading some hands-on impressions with some Wii games. I'm sure you're all doing the same. I beg you all to keep in mind that these titles are still six months from launching.
Ok. I'm done.
Check out these screenshots for Mega Man ZX for the DS. All the different Mega Man series are starting to get a bit confusing, but it sure does look pretty.

I don't want to get in on the fanboy dogpile, but the average gamer is not ready to pay $500-600 for a console...period. Other than videophiles, most people don't care about HDTV and High Def DVDs yet. When a standard is is set and prices go down, maybe.
Sony will have no problem selling systems this holiday, but after that...sales will be sluggish (by Sony standards) until a price drop AND a killer app gets released.
Which sucks really, since the most current gen stuff I and my gf play is on PS2. If anything this E3 is disaapointing realizing that it will be difficult to play the great games of the new/next generation...
Cheers,
Ben

That's right, processing power. Not control style or even significantly different gameplay. We've still got platformers, they're only in 3D now. We've still got sports games, they're only in 3D now. Etc. etc. It drives the industry, and sells new systems. It makes the general public (not DP members) tuck yesterday's system in the closet for the new kid on the block.
What doesn't hold water is all the amateur market analysts here who think they can outpredict Merrill Lynch and those who are well paid to predict such things.
And no, the fact that you work at Gamestop and "all your customers will buy a Wii on launch day" doesn't mean A THING. It's anectdotal evidence. And flimsy anectdotal evidence at that.
I don't hate Nintendo. I grew up with the NES, SNES, etc. But I do hate reading over and over this fanboy drivel about how cool you are for choosing "gameplay over graphics". We get it, you're old-school/a hardcore gamer/retro whatever. Get your head out. I like gameplay AND graphics and I'm not ashamed to admit it, and it doesn't mean I don't still play my Atari 2600 that I've had since I was 5yrs old. I question how anyone can truly "love video games" and proclaim that "Sony is ruining the industry" or that someone has been "Nintendowned". It's ridiculous, petty, and reflects badly upon the more mature gamers who are in this for the joy of gaming, not bragging rights.
News - Square Enix press conference concluded.
Posted by Josh Freund at 04:50:04 PM EST on 5.8.2006.
Square Enix's conference, which basically kicks off the pre-E3 conferences, is taking place right now in LA. So far, they've shown game footage of various titles and announced some release dates, but we're still waiting for potential surprises.
Here are the US release dates revealed so far:
Valkyrie Profile Lenneth (PSP) - July 18
Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII (PS2) - August 22. US version will contain some new features.
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS) - September
Final Fantasy III (DS) - September
Valkyrie Profile Silmeria (PS2) - September
Final Fantasy XII (PS2) - October
So far, trailers/videos of Dawn of Mana, Children of Mana, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI, Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, and the latest Final Fantasy XI expansion have been shown, along with a loooong Final Fantasy XII English trailer.
Update #1 - Wow, huge news! Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors was just shown; it's going to be a launch title for the Wii.
Update #2 - Two new Crystal Chronicles games coming. One for the DS called Ring of Fates utilizing Wi-Fi for multiplayer. The other is for Wii.
Update #3 - The Wii title is Chrystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers and is a launch title. Also, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII have been announced for PS3. Yes, two different FFXIII's announced. The first is presumably the normal FFXII, starring a sword and gun wielding female character. It will take place in what they call the most advanced civilization featured in a Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy Versus XIII sounds like a side-story. SE is emphasizing that in latin 'versus' means to change direction. But wait, that's not all. There will also be a Final Fantasy XIII for mobile devices.

And don't bring up that stupid girlie Aladdin rip off! Shantea?
@ petewhitley
Look here, it's real simple. We'd all be inclined to agree with you if the biggest selling systems were also the ones with the most horsepower, but that's just not the way it goes.
Graphical power alone simply doesn't move systems. If it did, the PS2 would have been a distant 3rd place in this generation.
I only need 2 more NES games (US)!
I think you guys are on two different levels.Originally Posted by Rev. Link
He's right, graphical prowess does push someone to buy a new system but as of this current generation and the upcoming generation there are far, far more variables that have major impacts on sales. The total sales of any given system are based on those variables, the total sales of a generation are largely (not all) due to a consumers desire for something that simply looks better. The difference in graphical quality between the competitors being one of those variables.
Theres no doubt the Xbox won many fanboys with it's "best performance" last generation, but when it comes down to actually purchasing a console even the most casual gamer will look at what games they do and don't want to play.
But now it's totally different. The price of the PS3 and the control scheme/lack of raw power in the Wii are two things the market has never encountered before and it'll be nigh impossible to predict "standings" among the big three in 2009.
What you can count on though is that Nintendo and Sony both have amazing marketing talents. Sony is a no brainer, they're the masters of spin as has been noted previously. They'll likely take the price point of the PS3 vs. the price of the 360 and make consumers think that it's literally TWICE as good because it's literally TWICE the price. And they've got enough trust in the mass market that people will believe it.
Nintendo has taken the DS from a niche market to really poking into the mass non-gamer market with games like Nintendogs and Brain Age. They're experienced in reaching that non-gamer market now and they'll use that to their full ability to push the Wii to a different level.
Nintendo will be the exception to the rule of graphical power, but even still it will be an enhancement over last gen and they'll likely get a LOT of sales at launch from users who simply want a better looking Zelda than they could get on the Cube.
Tony Hawk's Project 8 announced
