Default Blu-Ray players can self-destruct if stolen media is found.

Sony is currently evaluating DRM technology that will require all Blu-Ray players to be connected to the Internet, and if stolen/pirated media is detected, Sony will have the ability to send a "self-destruct" code which will make the player inoperable.

Does this alarm anyone else? It's not about piracy...it's about control.

Um, that link is almost a year old, and this is the first we're hearing about it? Doesn't anybody get a little skeptical now and then? Besides, who'd buy a peripheral that would have to connect to the internet to work? Nobody. Which means Sony ain't going to make such a device.

Sony may be dumb, but they are not stupid.

This would be fucking awesome to hack. I hope it happens, but there's really no chance in hell. Rest easy, people.

There's no way Sony would actually do this...but they've done things I've said that about before.

This isn't the first you guys have heard about it, you guys whined about it a year ago.

And Sony is just evaluating the technology, no one said the PS3 would do it.

Heh, right. As if the PS3's aren't going to be getting enough DREs as it is :P

But seriously, no way in hell that's going to happen. Imagine wanting to play a game when your internet connection is down: "The service you requested is currently unavailable. Please try again later" :/

well i dont know if that is true but remember few years ago they warned us about PC if we were to bought Pentinum 4 they would trace down people who were downloading and copying warez gamez appz etc they would be traced but i think its just a word to scare us all but wait and see more more nowadays our privacy issues are almost going away ! theres a lot of webcams around and the photo enforced ticket systems for light and i saw a photo enforced sign on interstate 5 in cali once wasnt sure what it was for but i suppose its for speeding why does the cop think its ok to sit on their lard asses and eat donuts and reading newspaper and let the photos take care of their business and they probably think donuts as their TOYS lmfao !

Seems like a decent idea to me. Obviously they're not going to nuke your system if you play ONE burnt disc or something, but if 20 codes a day are flying in from the same player for a month straight, why SHOULDN'T they nuke the thing?

because its none of their gawd dam buisness what you do with YOUR PROPERTY. the playstation 1 was one of the most pirated consoles of all time, and yet it was far and away number 1... in fact the ease to pirate is one of the factors that put it in that spot. if piracy was really that big of a deal, they would make proprietary media

    DING!

However, I seriously doubt Sony would be so stupid as to do this, especially after their whole "rootkit" debacle in the music market that left many with a bad taste in their mouth.

Yeah, piracy rules. I it did wonders for the Dreamcast.

Oh bullshit. Sure it would curb pirates, but it would also infringe on people playing burned DVDs (which aren't always bootlegs, I assure you). What you're defending is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. As for the DC arguement, the PS1 was pirated much more than that and it was way more successful. The DC just had the unfortunate timing to come out at an odd time, that and Sega pulled the plug too early. The major point is that you should be able to do what you want with what you buy. If I want to build a flux capacitator from old CD-I parts, that should be my business.
