I'm thinking about getting some of the Guitar Freaks games for PS1 but would like to know if you can play them with the Guitar Hero controller first. Amazingly, I couldn't find an answer to this in a Google search. Anyone know?
I googled for "guitar hero compatible with guitar freaks" and this was in the first hit:
"Also worth noting, the guitar isn't compatible with Konami's Guitar Freaks games, so if you're looking to replace your increasingly rare and somewhat flimsy Konami guitars, you're out of luck."
Looks like a no-go. Are the Guitar Freak games any good? I've never played one, but really enjoy Guitar Hero.
Ugh. I *knew* someone was going to find the answer in a Google search after I posted. Guess I gotta work on my searching skills.
I actually just read on the lik-sang forums that the GH controller IS compatible with Guitar Freaks. Don't know how reliable that place is though, so I'll take your word for it Flack.
I played Guitar Freaks a couple times in the arcade. Of course, it plays a lot like GH but it still has some major differences. Most notably the guitar controller only has 3 buttons instead of 5 but don't think that makes it any easier than GH. Some of the songs are insanely difficult. Another big difference is that you are penalized if your timing is too early or late (like the DDR and Beatmania games). Sountrack is all J-Pop/Rock crap too which I'm really not into but it's still a really fun game.
Ok, I own Guitar Freaks 3rd and 4th. It *is* possible, kinda. The only way I've found to do it is setting it to a different controller setting then stock, I believe the last one. This allows you to use the second third and fifth button as the 3 buttons for guitar freaks, and the strum bar does work. For some reason the guitar is on auto rock or whatever the pulling up of the guitar handle thing is for Freaks. Thats the only possible way of doing it without rewiring anything.
You've got to mod the controller. I'm not sure what is involved, but I do remember that you need to stick a switch in it somewhere to toggle between GH and GF mode. Let me try and find that...
Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Number 1 in the 'hood g!
It's also worth mentioning that the GH controller "holds down" left on the d-pad to identify itself, so several of the GF games freak out on menus because of this. You have to swap to a normal controller to make your selection, then go back to the guitar quickly before the song starts. And also, I've heard that it doesn't work quite so well with GF V, since they slightly changed the button assignments for control setting C, which is what this little trick relies on. It's not worth the trouble, I'd say. Just order the Konami guitar from Playasia. Heh.
but you can play mario paint with a super scope.....
