A Question about the SMS Sonic games...

I just got Sonic Jam for Saturn yesterday and looking through the memoribilia section I noticed that they always had the cover art for the SMS Sonic games lumped in with the Game Gear Sonic games and that the release dates seemed to follow the Game Gear releases more closely than the Genny/MD releases. To me this kind of implied that the SMS Sonic games aren't ports of the Genny/MD games so much as they are ports of the Game Gear games. Is this a correct assumption? Also, how close are the games to the Genny/MD versions?

The SMS and Game Gear have almost identical hardware. I think the only thing that prevents Game Gear games from being run directly on the SMS is some SMS limitation on the number of colors.

So, yes, one would be a port of the other.

Sonic 1 for the SMS looks like the Game Gear version. It's been awhile since I fired up 2 for the SMS, but I think it looked more like the Genesis version.

All the SMS Sonic games are basically just the Game Gear versions. I *think* that there are some zone title screen differences, but that's pretty much it.
