I think so, it is no VF 4 but if you can find it for a good price it is definitely worth it

It's certainly no VF4...although my friend who's deep into that series swears that 3tb is the best one ever made.

Just to throw a different spin on this one, I haven't found 3tb to be that great. I've always been a fan of the Virtua Fighter franchise, and have the original on 32X, VF2 on Saturn and Genesis, and 3tb. The landscapes and backgrounds are very nice - I especially enjoy the raft and rooftop stages. While I've been told that the game is as deep and graceful as the backgrounds, I just can't play it long enough to find out. The game feels rushed to me, as if it's missing a few details here and there. It's a good game, yes,.. but frankly, I prefer Virtua Fighter 2 over it any day.

Much of this could be due to being spoiled, though. 3D fighting on the Dreamcast is Soul Calibur - everything else just looks like Karate Champ in comparison.

First of all, lose the "L" - it's "Virtua."

Personally, I say go for it! The only catch is that you're going to NEED a couple joysticks, as the DC joypad is just awful for fighting games.

VF3 kinda got lost in the shuffle when the DC was launched, largely because of all the buzz Soul Calibur generated. Sega, for some odd reason, didn't seem to care all that much about one of their biggest franchises (if not the biggest, then certainly #2), as the DC port was shuffled off to Genki, who did not even have the final Dreamcast specs to work with. This explains why Team Battle looks a bit rushed.

Of course, the game still looks good, and the gameplay is perfectly captured from the arcade. And that's what matters. VF3 has such an enourmous amount of depth that you could study the game for years, and still learn new things. For you, it will come down to competition with your friends. Playing with the computer is a real bore, nowhere near as interesting as VF2 on the Saturn (although that game cheated like a bastard).

If you're familiar with VF4, then you already know most of the action. Just head over to Virtuafighter.com when you want to learn about the game. Have fun!

Yeah, I noticed how sucky the DC pad is for fighting games trying to play Jojo's Bizarre Adventure 9that and mind you I don't play fighting games too often).

    Why'd they call VF3 for DC VF3tb instead of a stright VF3?

And I will pick it up this week at the mall providing it's still there (and I have the ca$h).

It stands for Team Battle actually...as the team aspect was incorporated into the game.

    Terrific -- rock on.

Just so ya know, "Team Battle" was an arcade semi-sequel (like VF4 Evolution) that was widely popular in Asia, but never made it to the States. I think there were only two in North America, and at least one was in Canada. Anyway, a bit of trivia.

Again, don't get easily frustrated with the DC joypad. I've noticed that it's hypersensitive with diagonals, which made playing this game (as well as old NES games via emulators) a real pain. If you can find a good joystick on the cheap, then grab it.

Oh, and you have all the other great fighters for the DC, right? Sigh...I may hunt down a used DC just for Third Strike.

Ah, thanks for the heads up history on this title! Only DC fighting titles I have are VF3tb and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

I haven't played it long enough yet to get mad with the DC controller (VF3 that is).

    BUMP.

VF3tb is an excellent fighter, and it is significantly different from VF2 and VF4. I was among the many who was disappointed, maybe even a little bored, at the game at launch 1999. It seemed so passé compared to Soul Calibre at that time, with less impressive (flashy?) visuals, and seemingly slower gameplay.

Recently, I dusted off the game and I have VERY MUCH been loving it. Right now I'm playing 3-character team battles (I choose Akira, Jeffry, Akira) with 60 second matches on Hard difficulty, and the strategic battles have been incredible 1-player fun. I've also been enjoying the quiet, subdued Chinese/Japanese music on some levels, which reminds me of Shenmue scenes at times.

Concerning the DC stock controller, I have learned to use it well. It takes some extra precision to nail the diagonals as mentioned above, but nothing which ruins the game. I map P+K to L, and K+G to R, and I'm set. Depending on the character, I sometimes map P+K+G to R, such as doing certain moves with Akira.

I really enjoy the rooftop and rafts levels. Did you notice that when battling end-boss Dural in Team Battle, Dural grows semi-invisible (more with each iteration of her, it seems)? Cool stuff. I've not beaten Dural on Hard yet but I've come close.

In conclusion, I'm also a VF3tb fan, and I don't feel bad at all about not owning VF4 (I will probably pick it up eventually though). I played so MUCH VF2 on Saturn in the past ...

    B,F,F P+K!

I played VF3tb for awhile last night and quite loved it. I changed my button map to X-punch, A-kick, Y-guard, B-evade (I have a thing about keeping attack buttons close, go fig). The DC controller make sit kinda hard to pull off some combined moves but in all I'm enjoying the game and the team battle mode is a great precursor to the team battle games of now.

I'm glad that the controller's working out for you. I have nothing but bad memories with those damned things, however. I think I still have blisters on my fingers from using the shoulder buttons on the Tony Hawk games.

I always had problems with the joypad. A good example is Lau's elbow-palm. This is one the cornerstones to a good Lau game: forward + punch, then back, forward + punch. It's easy once you get the timing down, but I when I used the pad, I'd almost always end up jumping after the elbow, instead of the palm. D'oh!

OK, go buy Soul Caliber right now, it still ranks as one of the best looking fighters around.

I got this same VF3tb for $12.99 deal to, I'm digging it.
