Seems Ricoh has developed a drive that reads both HD-DVD and Blu-ray - together! (not at once, of course..)

With Benefits. There's gonna be a burner too.
Dual format DVD drives all over again. I suppose it was only a matter of time. I still won't but one for at least 304 years however.
Well as far as data storage goes this is big. Dual format Read write will help launch both formats much in the same way current drives did a lot to lauch DVD-R and DVD+R.Originally Posted by Griking
Makes this a lot more then a 304 year purchase to me. Space is precious.
It's just a combo drive. It's well known that there will be players that play both HD-DVD and Blu Ray. I'm guessing it will be a long time though before they are any good. I would rather have an individual HD-DVD drive and a individual Blu-Ray drive too. Of course, I will, with my purchase of the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add on, and the PS3.
(of course, I don't think either the 360 HD-DVD add on or the PS3 will me the ideal player for those formats, but it's a much cheaper way to go in the interim.
I don't expect to see the difference in the PS3 and 360 HD-DVD add-ons as far as picture and sound quality versus standalone players as we did with PS2/XBOX vs. Progressive scan DVD. Likely we'll seeing a scaling of the audio to highre rates in future standalone drives but what more for video? A 1080p HD-DVD player maybe, but likely not a big deal.Originally Posted by Anthony1
A Dual drive would be great. These new players are 90% PC's under the hood, and you could argue that the 360 and PS3 are as well...let's not argue though, just an analogy...
