Default What's a good DOS text editor?

Besides the one already built-in. :P

I have a 486 laptop loaded with DOS that I primarily use for text-editing, writing, etc. Only problem is, I tend to write with italics and bold and all that fancy stuff, and the built-in text editor doesn't seem to handle that at all. So, what I'm looking for is a DOS-based text editor that can write with italics/bold/whathaveyou. I'd appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

Back in the day before Word I used a program called PFS-Write. I know it supported bold and italics and all that, but I would imagine that the files would be fairly proprietary.

I used to use Wordperfect, which at the time was far more powerful than Micrsoft Works. I wrote up several papers in high school using it. If you can track down an old copy of it, I would definitely recommend it.

I can't remember the word processing package we used to use....but yea, just hunt down a copy of Word Perfect for DOS. It's pretty much the best thing available

Oh yes, WordPerfect 5.1 was da bomb.

MS Word 5.5 for DOS was once available for free somewhere in the depths of the Microsoft website, ostensibly for Y2k compatibility reasons. It's probably still there.
