I want to see some game developer not be a pansy and make it so you can kill and torture kids, participate in hardcore pornography, and just about everything that seems to be taboo in games these days.

All of these are taboo subjects, especially in video games. I don't think I've ever seen a game where you can do any of these things, except for maybe some obscure wacky hentai game.

I'm talking about a game that they send to the ESRB to get rated with all these things, and it becomes Adults Only. Then shipping it out to any store that will sell it.

Not just selling some crappy hentai game through some obscure website, which is about the most taboo we get with games these days.

Who agrees? The amount of controversy surrounding the game would equal phenomenal sales, even if it isn't available at Wal-Mart and the like because they refuse to sell it.

Everyone seems to think Grand Theft Auto is the most "hardcore" game out there. GTA is weak. There's no kids in it, no actual sex (
if you're lucky you might see a picture of a bare ass or boobs like in Vice City), it's not nearly as violent as it could be, there's no rape, no torture of animals.

Anyway, let's summarize the things that should be in a good "shocker" game that would just make Manhunt, GTA, BMX XXX and the like look pathetic in comparison.

-Animal torture and killing
-Being a terrorist
-Child killing & torture
-Gore
-Hardcore porn, not some pathetic little locked up sex minigame that wasn't even intended to be used in the first place like "Hot Coffee," which, by the way, isn't even sex. It's just dry humping. They're wearing clothes. How can you have sex with your clothes on?

The game should be commercial, rated by the ESRB, and sold anywhere that will sell it. It can be made for the PC, and if done right, probably for the various consoles (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3). Just look at Action Replay: That's unauthorized software but Datel found a way to make it run and they haven't been sued.

I'd like to see GTA be pointed at after this game comes out. Who'll be the first developer to realize the profit potential of a game so shocking and man up and make it? Just take the worst parts of the Internet and cram it into a game. Best idea ever.

I imagine that it'd be on the recieving end of the mighty government ban-hammer faster than you could say "Absolute waste of money." Half of that stuff you can't show on film, so I don't think an interactive DDR style baby raping mini-game would go down so well.

Why be shocking just for the hell of it? I suppose you may be right - create a hell of a shit storm and it'll probably sell, although maybe not in astronomical numbers. It'd also highlight that, really, GTA isn't that bad. Sure, it's not for kids, but still.

I imagine that what's happened with film ratings will happen with games as people gradually push the limits.

Close as we've gotten, you can buy and download an uncensored version ( http://www.larryuncut.com/ ), and guess what, it's a fun game, with classic game clones in it! But that didn't keep everyone from writing it off after barely / not playing it!

Postal 2 is the only other one that comes to mind, and that doesn't even have any nudity or sex in it. The beauty of postal 2 is that you *can* play through the game without ever hurting anyone, it's all up the the player how you tackle the objectives.

I am however a STRONG supporter of this idea, it needs to just HAPPEN so we can all move on with our damn lives over this whole "issue".

edit: i supposed Fahrenheit / INdigo Phophecy comes close to this, at least the PAL version. It's got a sex minigame, striptease bonus video, technical necrophelia, murders, blood, suicides, avoiding the cops, all kinda of fun stuff. But they censored that for US release anyway, and even if they did call down on it someone would be quick to point out the obviousness of the game's creator being HEAVILY inspired by american cinema. I assume he knew he "had" to have them fall in love and have onscreen sex because that's what all his favorite american movies have.

It would not sell hardly at all, even if it were a fun and well-made game (and based on your laundry list of ways to be offensive, it would be pretty hard to make it coherent). Look how well The Guy Game sold when people thought it had an underage girl in it. Look how many copies of Custer's Revenge are around.

It would sell if the developer actually put some effort into distributing it. The Guy Game didn't sell because it had a few brief videos with some nudity after playing through a long ass boring quiz thing.

Custer's Revenge came out a long time ago before games were very popular. That and block porn you can barely make out is pathetic.

If you want kids beating up/ picking on kids, I suggest you check out "Bully" which is slated for this year I believe.

Actually it can be done. You use an online distrubtion system and make sure you whore it to the press. Use the controversy to your advantage and appreciate they can't stop you on the web.

Or if it's a console game, a AO version? I know Wal-mart wouldn't carry them, same thing with porno mags and videos. But I'm not absolutely positive EB/GS won't sell AO games. I remember getting little AO stickers to put on the GTA:SA we had in stock and selling through those. A game as offensive as the one described (child torture - wtf?) would probably result in arrests for anyone attempting to sell it. Lotsa luck making money from that.. retailers wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole - even porno stores.

I understand it CAN be done, that doesn't mean it will be profitable.

I guess my point is getting distribution is an important process in the video game industry. Not many Video game magazines will be advertising an AO game either. Let alone review it. It just doesn't make sense to push an AO game out. Look at the Guy Game. That was an "M" game with nudity, and it got very little distribution, and it got a lot of press attention, but still didn't do well.

As for the "M" game with the "AO" patch, most retailers will just pull them from the shelf, just like Gamestop and Walmart did.
