What is a NES "TOP LOADER"??

I hear this term thrown around alot. Is this just the normal NES system that everyone had in the 80's?

NO. It's Nintendo's revised version of the original NES machine. This second version was much smaller, had different shaped controllers, and the games loaded into the top of the machine i.e. - "Top Loader".

The toaster NES had a design flaw involving the pin connector which is what causes alot of the issues you've read about here. The top-loader alleivates that problem and places NES carts perfectly (except for some unlicenced carts, Tengen I belive for one).

My toploader has av hookups. Doesn't help the picture that much though.

Oops hehee sorry for not explaining that "top loader" term, but like I said before the top loader is definitely an improvement over the original, ahhh butta your top loader has AV hook ups? I thought all the second models only had an RF switch hook up, hmmmm wow if that's the case then your lucky, unless Nintendo released later versions of the second model with A/V hook ups

Take original Nintendo, Tilt backwards until the cart slot is facing in the "up" position.

Nintendo never released top loader in USA with AV port, only RF. There is a web site somewhere that explains a hack to add AV ports. (here: http://www.gamesx.com/rgbadd/nes2avmod.htm)

Japanese Famicom that looks like top loader has only AV but you need a 60 pins to 72 pins adapter to play NES games.

What year was the top loader released? My thought is if Nintendo did release it when the SNES had come out shortly before, why have no AV jacks in? AV jacks arouind then did become the norm I think (correct me if I'm wrong please).

A/V jacks are just finally coming in as 'standard' on TVs (standard as in it's harder to find a TV without jacks, than it is to find them with). The 25" TV my parents bought in 1999 only has RF in.
