Default Super Mario World cart variant? (pics)

I noticed this some time ago but never got around to posting it. I got a boxed SNES that happens to be an original launch console. As a matter of fact the box for the SNES only as Super Mario World on the back of it, no other games.

I got to looking at the cart the boxed system came with and I noticed that it was different from my other boxed SMW copy. The title is in a straight line, not “Super” on top of “Mario World” like my boxed copy, the Super Mario World title on the top of the cart is also in a different location. The label is also much darker in color as well as having a larger Mario and Yoshi. The Nintendo “model” number on the game is SNS-MW-USA where as my other copy is SNS-MW-USA-1.

    Here’s some pics:

    (Strange copy is on top)

    (ROM shot)

Anyone else have this cart? Is it just an early release pack-in? Any help would be great.

One last thing…the tag on the back not only does not have Spanish instructions, it also has #’s for Maintenance/repairs and a separate # for game play questions. The other one does not have this.

    It's a known varient...

Whether there's any game difference is another matter.

    I guess I should have done a search…

As to value or rarity I knew it’s nothing but I thought it was a neat difference, I have both on display. Was there ever a third variant?

I have that (early version) cart as well. It came with my SNES set (purchased on 1/18/92).

The 2 normal versions that you have are not that much different when it comes to rarity. There are at least a million between two of the them if they Player's Choice titles really did have to sell a million copies. On Ebay you can pick either one up for next to nothing and all you have to do is look through a couple of auctions to find both of them.

The Player's Choice version is much more difficult to find. You might have to look through every auction on Ebay to find one and even then you might now find one.

I noticed the three versions as of recent while working on my Definative Variants Guide. Check it out if you want to see a number of variants that you might not have known about. There is a lot of research which is not on in the thread and will be added soon.

I've known about both versions. I have the 2nd one, and have yet to notice any difference between it and a ROM of the 1st version.

BTW, there are 4 versions I know of that where released in the US:

Super Mario World (First Edition) (SNS-MW-USA)

Super Mario World (Second Edition) (SNS-MW-USA-1)

Super Mario World (Player's Choice Edition) (Not sure of it's code...)

Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World (Features new sprites for Luigi) (SNS-5M-USA)

I know but that's not really a cart variant more like a different cart. Any way, I didn't know that there was any difference in the the actual game, including a different sprite of Luigi. I used to own the game, lent it out and never saw it again. I never played the Super Mario World game on it because I had already played the dedicated cart several times. Also, I have rarely ever played as Luigi.

I think he might mean the sprites in the allstars part of the game? in Mario bros 1, 2 & 3, Although, i think i do remember noticing luigi looking different in SWM? will have to have alook now..

Sorry to bump an ages-old thread, but I was going through my SNES manuals and found out that I have 4(!) different Super Mario World part #'s here.

    SNS-MW-USA
    SNS-MW-USA-1
    SNS-MW-USA-2
    SNS-MW-USA-3

Can anyone confirm what exactly these #'s go to?
    SNS-MW-USA - original boxed release
SNS-MW-USA-1 - bundled with SNES set?
    SNS-MW-USA-2 - Million Seller?
    SNS-MW-USA-3 - ???

    I have the MW-USA and MW-USA-1 cartridges, but I'm not aware of a -3 cartridge part #...

Wow...guess I'll answer my own question. I was cataloging my Super Mario Kart manual and saw similar numbering. It turns out this is the difference:

    SNS-MW-USA-2 - Million Seller, K-A ESRB Rating
    SNS-MW-USA-3 - Million Seller, E Rating

It doesn't answer why there's a -1 or where it came from, as most Nintendo releases had a -1 variant before the Million Seller games...

Sorry to bump this but I found a larger sticker super mario world recently and want to know if it was rarer than the small sticker version. I'm keeping it either way because I like this variant more but it would be nice to know.

Also, where did the large sticker variant come from anyway?

Are the players choice versions really that hard to find too?

Any SNES game rated E would be a very late release. Holiday 1997 still was getting K-A games even on N64, like WCW/nWo World Tour.

Yep. That combo cart was an oddity. Boxed copies being PAL exclusive, and no JPN version at all.

I always found it strange that the animation for him shooting fireballs was different too. It's been a while since I played this version, but I think the Mario animation remained the same, and Luigi looked like he was having a sneezing fit.

I believe there is a difference in the ROM. On the older one, you could eat the dolphins with Yoshi on that one water level, whereas on the newer one you can't.

Here's a picture of the box, cart artwork is similar to the US version, but cart has Japanese shape.

Are you going to aim for Euro variants after that?
